Felicia Temperature Sensor; I can't find one!

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Our 1997 Felicia 1.3 MPi needs a new temperature sensor but I can't find a new one. Both the ones my local motor factor had on offer weren't the right ones and neither do ECP or Skoda seem to have it. I am beginning to wonder if its the wrong sensor in the first place. I've attached a picture - does it look right to anyone else?

Alternatively I have a thermostat housing from an earlier SPI engine, the metal housing. Is it possible to swap the later MPI plastic housing with the earlier one?

Thanks.

That's the right sensor.

No, you can't swap the other one - the MPi one is two in one - one for the ECU, one for the gauge.

I think I have several in the garage that you can have for postage (had lots of spares when I had a Felicia rally car in my avatar). Cue moderators!

today temperature sensors look different from those in 1997.

the most important thing is to buy one having the same ring color.

Ah really? I've seen them like that but assumed they were different.

I'll have a look this afternoon... I've cleared my inbox, had no idea that had happened!

What problems are you getting to lead you to changing the sensor?

The temp gauge doesn't work. Needle doesn't even think about moving.

Mine only starts to move when you're sat in traffic in hot weather. It never moves in normal driving. My old Felicia was exactly the same so I just assumed it was a Felicia thing. I doubt you get many traffic jams where you are so maybe yours is the same.

^ Fellys are known for thermostat problems & replaced mine earlier this year. At the time she was only just lifting on the temp gauge & would progress to normal whilst stood idling for a while. ;)

...so I just assumed it was a Felicia thing.

no, it is not.

first do the wiggle test (wiring, connectors, including on dashboard panel) maybe put some WD40 in connectors.

if not working, measure temp sender resistance at room temp and in boiling water.

put a dummy resistor instead of sender to check gauge.

if still not ok change sender.

so there are solutions instead of doing nothing.

Dont assume it is the sender, in our newly acquired felly, it is the plug terminals eaten away by corrosion.
