1.9TDi 130PD, CEL light on, Limp Mode, power loss.

Featured Replies

Hi,

So, I have an '04 1.9 TDI (130 PD) SE model, and I have an issue with the turbo.

about 30% of the time, it starts up in 'Limp Mode', or what I assume is Limp Mode. the car feels sluggish, as if it's got a kind of limiter on it? I believe this to be limp mode? If i turn it off and on again, this goes away, but the CEL is constantly on. once you do that, the turbo kicks in properly...or it DID anyway.

I ran the fuel level down to the red (re-fuel light came on) a couple of weeks ago, and did about 10 miles before I reached a garage. After that, the turbo either didn't kick in, or was really weak. I put 100ml of Millers Ecomax stuff into half a tank of fuel and gave it a good run, a couple of motorway trips, basicly got back to 'red', I've now put another half a tank in with 50ml of this stuff in, and it HAS started to improve.

I've just had a full service, oil and filters changed. The Air filter was pretty mucky, and the fuel filter was BLACK inside, so I'm hoping to see further improvement there, and I've had the fault code read.

it's: P0234, turbo boost sensor??? Anyone got any ideas on this? How to fix and how much it's gonna cost? Would the "Mr Muscle" thing I've read about help with this one?

Cheers

Seano

would that kinda do what Mr Muscle would do? I'm not handy with spanners...I can do guitars....but not cars! haha

It's supposed to, but I haven't used it to testify to it working. I'm ok with the spanners & guitars too.

is the 130PD supossed to have a CEL ? mine doesn't :P

The first thing to see if is the actuator on the turbo is stiff or not.  Obviously this needs to be checked out with a cold engine otherwise you will burn yourself.  if it moves freely (while you apply a vacuum from near the n75 valve with your mouth) then the vanes/control ring in the turbo are ok, and Mr Muscle won't help.  if it creaks and "jumps" then you at least have an issue with the turbo.

After that you should consider:

- checking for a vacuum leak,

- faulty n75 valve

- faulty map sensors.

VAG scope with actual vs specified MAP is a good place to start if you have a mate with vagcom.

You can guess what I am doing to my car this morning!  I have the dismantling & treatment process down to a fine art now :-)

What could it be  LOL!

What could it be  LOL!

I dunno ;-)

I can only conclude that the 110TDI, coupled with my driving style and twisty country A-roads to work is just the wrong combination.  I seem to have to clean it 3 times a year otherwise the limps start to come back.  Apart from booting it up most hills I encounter it the engine sits at about 2000rpm/60mph for 120 miles each day.

Until a few hours ago it was sticky right at the start of its movement - so if I remembered to open the bonnet before I set off and suck on the vaccuum pipe and press on the actuator with my thumb it would free up and I could have a limp free trip.  The rest of the car is great, I just hate this frigging turbo :-(
