Hot rear of engine bay

Featured Replies

Hi all. I've had my superb tdi for three months now and I love it. It had a new egr cooler fit under warranty when I bought it and its run perfect ever since.

I've just been out on a small 15 minute run and it was juddering slightly when I was probably in too high a gear(which I've not had before, it generally chugs along in any gear). When I reversed it onto the drive there was a strong burning rubbery smell. I traced it to behind the engine near the firewall and you could see the heat coming from it. Was pinking a lot as well.

Any ideas anyone?

Cheers, Dan

Is it a diesel?

If so then could be the DPF regenerating.

Yes, it's a diesel. I've heard of the dpf, but don't know how it works. Is it normal?

In a word yes. If you do too many short trips or just trundle around town then the dpf fills up with soot and the ECU does some trickery to heat it up and burn off the soot.

Sounds like you interupted a normal DPF regen, were the fans running full pelt when you stopped the engine?

The engine adjusts the timing to get the exhaust really hot to burn off the soot, so that accounts for rough running, pinking, burning smell and heat at the back of the engine bay. Also when you turn off the engine with lots of heat in the exhaust from a regen the fans often run full pelt for 10 minutes or so to cool everything down a bit.

Thanks for the quick reply. Just a bit concerned as I've never noticed it before.

Thanks. Never noticed the fan TBH.

I had the fear of god put into me about the dpf when I first bought it of a very knowledgeable old chap near me. I try and take the wife's car if I'm just nipping out but a fiat 500 compared to mine isn't quite the same. Suppose I'm spoilt a bit now.

Turbo is down that area also so if you feel it ain't right take it in and get it checked as the rocker cover can leak on the engines or the turbo seals,

Regarding the not using it for shorties, if you notice it kick in (normally an extra 100 rpm at idle) simply drive keeping the rpm at 2000+ until the idle settles back down, my Insignia did it a few days ago and I had it clear within 2 miles simply by holding gears to keep the revs up, don't let people tell you to blast it up the motorway as it's not how it works, it works on heat generation that is sufficient at 2100 rpm wherever you are, I think the most important factor is to ensure the re-gen completes before turning off, hth.
