Octavia vRS 2.0TDi DSG gearing

Featured Replies

Can anyone confirm whether the following figures are correct for the gearing in a 2012 Octavia vRS 2.0TDi (170) DSG?

Gear    mph/1000rpm

1                5.2
2                8.8
3              13.8
4              20.0
5              26.4
6              32.0

If the above is correct then max speed in 2nd is only 18mph more than in 1st!

The quoted gearing in 6th means that top speed (139mph) is reached at 150 revs over the revs (4200) for max power.

Is the gearing different in the petrol version with DSG?

No one has information?  I'm disappointed.  I thought there was an expert on here for absolutely everything connected with Skodas! :wonder:

That's pretty specific data you are after.

Most of us wouldn't have them to hand......I'm sure someone will go out and experiment and give you some answers. With that in mind, how did you measure your speed when you conducted your experiment?

GPS speed would be best to remove any individual speedometer errors.

I didn't measure the speed.  I found that data on the internet - don't remember where.  Ratios seemed strange so I am just asking for confirmation or correction.  I thought some-one would know a source of 'official' data on DSG gear ratios.

As you suggest the other way to gain the data is by practical experiment.  When I get the chance I will ask my brother to accompany me and use my sat-nav to check speeds at say 2,000rpm in each gear.

You did only wait a few hours before demanding an update.

On a Sunday Evening

When the weather is glorious and there's also been good stuff on TV.

There seems to be a misconception with gearbox ratios that as more gears are added they just add higher ratios at the top of the pile.  In fact, in most cases they close up the ratios and also extend the ratios a little at each end making 1st a very low "get you moving then change straight to 2nd" and making the top gear an overdrive economy gear meaning the highest speed is obtained in top gear minus 1.

My last 7speed DSG was definitely in this vein - 1st gear was incredibly low, so even under hard acceleration in S mode the change to 2nd was made within a few yards, 1st gear was never selected automatically while moving, even at a crawl, but was only selected as you came to rest.  7th was a very long relaxed cruising gear that never got selected in S mode unless cruise control was activated and even in D mode any acceleration above a tickle on the throttle pedal had it changing down to 6 or 5.  Spirited driving in S mode rarely saw it select above 5th.   I am almost certain that in the user manual it did say that the advertised max speed of 140mph was only achievable in 6th.

Gearing on the vRS CR DSG is pretty close ratio, compared to the 2.0 TDi 140 CR MK6 Golf manual I had before it there is quite a considerable difference.

Ive noticed in the Octavia once in 6th at reasonable motorway speeds it'll rarely shift down unless provoked as its happy to pull hard in that gear; gets a bit busy though when pushed. My Golf was very lazy in 6th and a downshift was nearly always required to get a wiggle on but was less busy on a cruise; still it also lacked 30hp and 22 lb/ft torque.

Thanks for the replies.

You are absolutely right; I was far too impatient in waiting for a reply.  I apologise.  I was carried away by my believe that this site has numerous users (always logged on!) who know absolutely everything there is to know about all Skodas.

The Octavia vRS has the 6-speed wet-clutch version of the DSG and top speed is reached in 6th.  The top speed of 139 is above the reach of 5th. Sports mode does use 6th.  As the DSG in D will select 6th at less than 40mph that gear seems rather low to me - I expected it to be higher for more relaxed motorway cruising.  It would appear that the 7-speed DSG has a 7th gear more aimed at relaxed cruising.

From my days studying 'Theory of Machines' I remember that a car is considered over-geared if the top speed is achieved at revs below maximum power and considered under-geared if it achieves top speed at revs above maximum power.  The diesel vRS/DSG achieves top speed at 150rpm above max power so is a little under-geared.

I did have a test drive in a Golf GT 2.0TDi(140) manual and agree with your description of its gearing.

As my vRS is a DSG I would prefer higher gearing and let it down shift from 6th to 5th when necessary.  In my opinion when in D it often engages too high a gear - 4th at less than 30 and 6th at less than 40.  The electronics seem 'happy' to let the car drive at around 1200-1300rpm on a light throttle.  As an IAM observer I would expect the IAM examiner to fail a driver who drove a manual like that.  I often use S around town.

The DSG obviously has different programming for the vRS. On my 2.0 TDI PD140 DSG it states in the manual that in 'Sport' mode the DSG will not shift above 5 gear as top speed is actually achieved in 5th gear.  I guess the extra power of the vRS allows top speed to be reached in 6th.

It's not something I have experimented with much, as I'm quite attached to my driving license!

Unless I take the car to Germany, whether the car achieves top speed in 5th or 6th gear will remain purely theoretical.  I also want to keep my license.

Going next week... can't test it on my 1.9 DSG as we will have the bikes on the roof! lol
