Only had my car 2 days :( New clutch needed

Featured Replies

Driving my car back that I collected the other day on a 3hr drive or so.

Its a 1.9tdi PD100 mapped to about 170bhp so is still a 5sp gearbox, cruising at about 70mph on the motorway and put my foot down and the revs just flew up and I didnt move anywhere. Major disappointment :(

So was clearly the clutch slipping or just not grabbing at all seeing as it didn't bite at any point, had to back right off.

It has only done it this once but I can notice the clutch getting heavier and am getting a little worried Its going to need to be changed sooner than I originally hoped.

Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced 5 speed clutch that will manage the fairly modest 170bhp?

I would say my budget is around £500 (don't laugh) but thats what I think I can afford.

Thanks chaps :)

You really need to drop a cog when mapped on an oem clutch or feed the power sensibly until its out of the peak torque band

Just flooring the pedal is a recipe for disaster, may be alright for a while if you do this. Mines started slipping slightly but has sprung back into life again :)

Yeah thats what I've been doing, just driving in a gear lower than what id normally be in and waiting for the revs to build before putting foot down.

I hope that like you, my clutch will carry on for a while longer.

Having just paid for the car, money is in short supply!

Thanks for the response Big Jase

:)

Out of interest where did you buy the car from?
If its from trade you've every single right to go back and get your money back, if its privet though you'll find it hard to get anything, I know you didn't ask this but I'm just double checking so you dont get screwed over.

Person who had it obv never took into consideration the clutch with that kind of power, even the PD130 6spd gearboxes struggle with remaps on their standard clutch.

Look for a uprated single mass flywheel conversion to handle the power otherwise the new clutch just wont last long at all. you might struggle with £500 though unless you find a nice chap on here to do it for you.

What sort of mods does it have to get 170 bhp out of a PD100?

Lets face it......You are not far off double the power of stock. You'd have to expect a bit of protest from a standard clutch from time to time. As for what to replace the clutch with.....I don't know, but it's worth having a look at darkside to see what they have in the way of clutches.

I would go for a VR6 clutch and G60 flywheel, thats what is fitted to mine, rated to ~300lb/ft

yeah, what modifications have been done to the car?  For a PD100, 170bhp involves some fairly hardcore modifications to the fuelling and turbo.  I wouldn't be doing this without a clutch upgrade.

Its had PD150 injectors, hybrid gt1749vnt turbo, new air induction and a custom remap

I dont know for sure that it's 170bhp, but thats what is was advertised as having.

So the VR6 clutch will go straight on?

(stage 2 hybrid turbo apparently)

How come they're so cheap??? And which weight flywheel would be the best option?

As above - they're much much cheaper than the others. Thanks for the top advise. This will be the one I'll get!

Thank you :)

Chris, how does yours feel in the way of pedal weight in comparison to the standard clutch.

(difference in how hard you have to push!)

Noticeable?

I thought there must have been a bit of cash spent on it to get that kind of power! Be interesting to see what it's producing on a rolling road. But the power claims don't sound that unrealistic considering the mods.

I'd love to do this on my PD100 estate. It'd be quite the sleeper car! But I don't have the spare cash. Plus I am quite attached to my con rods, and would not be pleased if one departed the engine through the side of the block!

Rods are fine upto 300bhp

Wow....that's impressive. Are you talking from bitter experience?

My old clutch had gone, so feel wise its hard to tell, but 13k miles later no noticeable judder than usual as the PD100's have a SMF fitted as standard from factory I believe.

I had no idea! I thought they were all DMF!

Going to buy the VR6 clutch you mentioned, how much do you think it will be to get fitted at a local garage?   £100?

Thanks Chris

I think it'll cost you more than that. It's gotta be 4-5 hrs bare minimum labour for a clutch change....probably a bit longer. So £250-£350 is more likely.

Unit 18 charged me around £150 last time

£150 sounds a little more inviting. I'll phone around and see what people will charge for fitting.
