track tyres?

Featured Replies

Looking to throw some tyres on a set of 18" rims for the Golf when it goes to the track, I was thinking part worn slicks maybe, but need to decode the side wall height as they are not usual format of 235-40-18 they are 235-605R-18, so if somebody could shed a little light on how that works I would be grateful.

Second choice is Federal 595RSR's however Camskill who supply are having issues with the size that I would need and only one or two shipments a year rules that out.

Then I thought of these as they get a good review on tyre view, Nankang NS-2R rather cheap per corner but who cares if they grip like sh!t to a blanket, at the price they are almost as cheap as a good part worn, AND this had something to do with me making my choice,

and of course I could go down the part worn route of run what you are offered at the tyre house.

So, it would be interesting to see what you guys are running for your track events and why.

Not wanting to pay more than £100 per corner, so shout with what you think would suit.

 Thanks

Road tyres.

Because I don't want the hassle of changing them and runing two sets to save 1 or 2 seconds per lap.

I'l be a bit slower and won't put my back out. :)

I ran with part worn Dunlop SP Sports yesterday at Combe... Didn't have any issue with grip.. Road tyres FTW!

Thanks for the replies, I will have a set of road tyres too, I assume the Nankangs are road legal?

Anyway, moving on, I was speaking to someone today who races a car, he has a lot of 18" part worn slicks that I can recycle, I will get a set and see what they are like.

I ran kumho v70's on pro race 3's with excellent results but got fed up carrying them around and changing them over.

Also if I was quicker than the next car on road tyres it felt like I was cheating. If I went slower than the next car on road tyres I was upset and angry lol!

The track tyres give a little bit more enjoyment with sharper turn in and more grip but also cost ££££.

 Where are they now?! :D

Where are they now?! :D

I believe some Cornish pasty eater from the deep south is enjoying them now lol!

Jase are you running 18" wheels?  I ask because I might be getting some 18" part worn slicks, could pass a few your way.

Nope - 17s.  18s don't fit under the arches, and I wouldn't fancy trying to run the silly low profile you need on 18s, on a trackday. :)

The profile is quite good, the tyres are off an Escort Maxi RS2000, this one to be precise.

I ran the 595 RSR's at knockhill last weekend when it was 26 degrees, awesome tyre ! Haven't shown any signs of wear even when it was that hot

I hear good and bad about these tyres, but I have been really tempted to get a set, even if they are just for the fronts.

I never ran slicks, I did run pirelli corsa's for a few laps, fantastic grip.

Paul, ran slicks on his Octavia, the only thing I have to warn you is the grip is fantastic once warm and of course extra grip excerpts far far higher forces in braking and cornering, so bear that in mind. Paul also had buckets and 4 pt harness on ferodo 3000 pads, it was one hell of a fun octavia!

But I also thought some venues only let you run slicks with a cage, so might be worth checking.

I also avoided running on super low profiles, I could not resist those red and white kerbs.

Also ran with  dunlop race pro 900 something or other. Near enough a slick, described as a damp cut track tyre, but road legal, lethal near any puddles. Fantastic on the roads as most top end sports tyres are.

When we briefly ran the 325 (stripped, lowered, caged, seated), we put khumo on, not expecting much, but actually getting a lot out of it, and we could drive it to the circuit (bad choice).

If you are anywhere near your wear markers, bear the drive home in mind. If your tyres are german in origin, it felt like <3mm the wear rate is exponential, given it's not as good as new, so likely to push more, scrub more etc....  also on Toyo's on very hot days, but I imagine that is true of any tyre in 25+degrees when pushed towards the end of the day as confidence grows :)

Thanks for all the advice guys.

I had heard a cage would be needed with slicks so probably another reason why not to go with them. I have been quite impressed with the ZZ3 Avons I ran on the Fabia, but as you all know getting exactly what tyre you want when looking at part worns is difficult.

I am guessing 17" wheels, with part worns for October at Oulton Park, a good starting point to see how we get on.

I combe yesterday I was running A048 yoko's on the front and R888's on the rear.

The tyres did seem to come and go at points as it was warm and I wasn't being gentle, but over all I was happy with the balance.

Thanks for the info Cossie1, how did your gearbox perform?

The gearbox was ok, shame about the cv joint lol

oh hell, you are suffering the domino effect!

I am panicking about taking the Golf to Oulton Park in October as it will be its first thrash, I am certain something will drop off and my day will be toast!!!

I am hoping to call MSV and ask if I can have an hour on an earlier session in September, I emailed them and they were ok with it as long as the event is not fully booked or if somebody has gone home early for whatever reason I can go on for an hour or so.

You should be able to get a CV off the silver Octy breaking on here. Good luck with it mate.

I did the cv joint on the trackday before last, so it's only just 2 months old, so it will be replaced under warranty (I hope) as I bought a complete new shaft.

The cv boot came off (I even noticed it on the track on the cool down lap and joked that it was probably off my car), half a lap later the steering is vibrating like hell and trying to pull out of my hands lol.

Funny thing is, both clips for the cv boot are still attached to the shaft :D

  • 2 weeks later...

Done approx 30+ track days on all sorts including A048R's, 888s, Dunlop slicks, Michelin slicks, T1Rs (pants) 595RSR's, V70's, AE08's etc etc.

I was at Croft last friday and a lad was running the Nankangs. Awesome tyre. Name snobs will diss them but Im 99% sure that they are the exact same compound as 888's!

Slicks arent worth the trouble tbh. Extra grip puts the car under so much more stress I dont believe its worth it. Everytime Ive run them something has either failed/broke/damaged etc.

Every track car I've had I've run A048s and they are awesome in the dry and incredible in all but heavy rain(standing water). Great tyre but SO expensive now, dread to think what they would cost for yours!
