TPM - well worth the extra

Featured Replies

I'm such a goody two shoes I always check tyre pressures, oil and washer water before going on a long journey.

Yesterday I forgot (Grr!) and got 5 miles down the road and the TPM light came on.

Stopped the car and checked pressures.

Hot day so both front and nearside rear at 34psi.

offside rear was at 26psi due to a screw having found its way into the edge of the tread.

Boot was full of stuff but I could access my 12v electric pump which I keep under the seat so pumped the tyre up to 34psi and limped back home, (lost another 5psi on the way back).

non repairable so new tyre being fitted today, shame as Yeti has only done 6k from new.

So if it wasn't for TPM could have been a lot further down the road before I had discovered the puncture.

(Yeah I know if I had checked tyres first, wouldnt have needed the TPM but hey I'm a stupid bunny!)

But could easily have happened on a trip to the shops, which unless you check every tyre before every journey you wouldn't have found.

So don't feel bad about it

Whoever checks their tyre pressures before EVERY journey is either a complete saddo, or has too much spare time on their hands.   :D

I have the TPM as well, and it's a great asset.

It also forces you to check all the tyres by not telling you which tyre activated the alert which, IMHO, is a good thing.

You can enable TPM with Vag-Com on all Yetis. The only problem is you need to reset it with Vag-Com too after a puncture or tyre change.

However you can probably buy a cheapie from eBay to do the reset, cheaper than retrofitting a TPMS switch.

The v3 unit I'm sure tells you the wheel. It's on the new Golf and Octavia

OOOOOO that's interesting, thank you.

Maybe they'll roll it into the new facelfited Yeti when it arrives.

Along with Keyless entry, auto stop-start and upgraded Park-assist for driving/reversing into parking bays.

I hope SUK read this. :p

Has anyone ever had experience of the Wireless ones you can buy which work from the valve caps sending a signal to an on board mini screen that shows all four tyre pressures and the tyre temperature. There are  a few on ebay from what appear to be reputable manufacturers names.

Not Yeti related, but my Bike, (BMW R1200GSA) Has Tyre Pressure monitoring as standard, valves have a bluetooth module and send the pressures to the clocks and it's 100% accurate according to my snap on TPG. As long as it's from a reputable manufacturer, the valve cap idea could work really well.

It's nice to know the actual pressure in Bar / Psi rather than the ECU calculating rolling circumference which is how the TPM works iirc.

On my Mk2 Octavia vRS, TPM (an early version, granted) was less than useless, it never triggered but that could have been a coding issue I guess. Good to see it works well on the Yeti.

Yes.

They don't like getting wet!!

I got my money back, after a bit of a fight. Company was somewhere in Essex.

Thanks Graham you may have saved me £130 unless someone can convince me differently.

This is very similar to the OEM sensor kit on my BMW, but you have the expense to add of having the tyres removed to retrofit the valves.

My GSA has forded rivers and done a fair bit of off roading and no problems with the system on it yet (on my second bike equipped with it). So using something that is a complete valve assembly, rather than a valve cap could work, if you where up for the other bits that go with it :)

I always thought it was a little silly that it didn;t - i mean it must know.....
