Fabia vRS Air Conditioning and DSG issues...

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Picked up my 60 plate vRS last weekend, just over 30k on the clock and am completely smitten with it, except for a couple of issues.

First of all, the aircon seems to work intermittently and is quite noisy, making what I can only describe as a chugging noise when heard from outside the car at idle, it does blow ice cold however. Yesterday, I experienced some hesitation from the drivetrain when the aircon was on. This hesitation is totally absent with aircon switched off. I have also noticed that nothing seems to happen when the air recirculation button is pressed (Climatic system). Pressing this button seems to cause all of the problems to start though! I'm assuming there must be some control unit problem, sticking flaps, compressor failure or all three.

Secondly, I have noticed a very faint rattling which seems to be coming from the nearside front at low speed over uneven ground. It is only noticeable with nearside front window open, it isn't audible with windows closed. I've read that this could be the transmission, hopefully it isn't and is something minor!

It still has 6 months Skoda warranty to run, so it will be going in to Farmers Skoda, Leicester - anybody here familiar with them, have any opinions or horror stories about them?

Thanks for taking the time to read this post - any advice or info is much appreciated!

Hi noris, I've dealt with farmers Skoda in leicester on more than one occasion! Personally I've had mixed feelings with them, pm me and I will explain more if you require! Not to sure on your problems as I can say I've heard them with my vrs! Upload some pictures of your car and ill keep an eye out for it as I'm based around leicester :D

Also it could be one of the many duff ones kicking around ? Many have now been returned to dealers with issues , only to be re-sold to an unsuspecting customer !!

I got the car booked in with Listers Skoda Coventry (in Bedworth which was closer than Farmers in Leicester), having had dealings with the Listers group in the past and being satisfied with how they looked after me, I was pretty happy to leave it with them to have a ponder over. The aircon is now sorted, no hesitation from the engine anymore, turned out it needed re-gassing.

The transmission rattle, I was told were normal shifting noises from the DSG transmission - I remain unconvinced that this is a fair explanation to be honest, the transmission does however, operate faultlessly. A friend of mine owns a virtually identical vRS with similar mileage and that doesn't rattle. I'll tell my friend to get his in ASAP as it doesn't make the noises it should! :giggle:

Regards.

My air conditioning condenser and expansion valve were replaced last June(2015) after leaky A/C condenser was found to have rust spots and was leaking refrigerant. As we have noticed that it is now not cooling very much it was booked into the garage that replaced the condenser and other parts last June as we thought the system just needed topping up. On collection we found the garage was unable to get the system working without further investigation as the system appeared blocked with a white substance with the consistency of wallpaper paste. They had managed to clean up the substance from the control valve and wider pipes but this has not unblocked the system. They do not know what this white substance is (an emulsion of oil and water?) or how to flush it out of the system. Has anyone have any ideas as to what this white substance is and how to get rid of it? The garage says it will need to take out the dashboard to get further access to the other parts of the system and this sounds expensive. I have already spent nearly £1000 on repairing this air conditioning system and would prefer to do without it rather than spend further money on sorting out this problem which may well return after being fixed again.

Difficult to say what it could be. It might be they didnt vac the system when refilling and its water emulsified with oil and refridgerant.

When any major a/c item is changed, the drier should also be changed and the system should be flushed (dont know what they use, but any proper a/c specialist would know), the system should then have the correct amount of pag oil filled, full vacuum applied for at least 30 mins and then refilled with gas by weight.

Did they do all this?

I've had my 2011 vRS from new and covered 40k and the dsg has always rattled on uneven ground, can hear it with window open but not when it's closed.

Same here - had mine from new. When I first had it I took the supplying dealer's Service Manager for a drive in an attempt to identify an intermittent rattle. After hearing it he said many vRSs do that (with the 7-speed DSGs) in a similar fashion to the dry clutches on a Ducati.

My 2011 DSG also rattles intermittently mate. Usually over bumpy ground etc.

I didn't notice - fair cop, guv'nor :D .

As above, that garage that opened this system up and repaired it must have done something wrong for this to happen - not normal at all!

Edit:- if there had been some moisture left in that system, I would have expected that you would have found that the system only worked for short periods - then got choked by a bead of ice (frozen moisture) ended up round about the expansion valve - which would disappear when the system was not being asked to chill the car, then appear the next time it was used.

Another Edit:- if you don't get anywhere with that garage, either get them to, or you take that car to a proper auto air con place as they might be able to tell you what has gone wrong and maybe flush out sections of that system without resorting to removing the dashboard etc.

Edit Again:- on second thoughts, as the tubes in the evaporator (the bit behind the dashboard) are likely to be the smallest of any of the fridge lines, then that will be why they just want to, along with other things, just replace that part - which will end up being big money, so that might just kill off any plans to get that system running again, but if you don't go through the motions and try a proper auto air con place, you will never know! (I'm just preparing you for the worst)
