WOW: 16,000 mile Rapid convertible on ebay

Featured Replies

All,

Please see my full update on the Cabrio in the other site. Hasten to say its not in my garage right now. I am gutted TBH. Have been as honest as I can. It's still for sale.

To save y'all the trip, essentially the cabrio wasn't all it is cracked up to be. See below for dexter33's comments.

Cabrio update.

Took a trip over to look at the Cabrio and was very disappointed. I will list the good bits, bad bits and then covered up bits,

GOOD. The hood and T bar are in perfect condition, showing very little use. The hood is free from tears, rips or missing studs. It fitted well and the support functioned as it should. The seats are in excellent condition except a rip in drivers seat that will stitch. The wheels are in excellent condition. It started and drove very well, through all the gears. No evidence of stress fractures to rear area. Bonnet and front wings in excellent condition, bonnet looks new.

BAD. The body has been re sprayed badly, £500 job I would say. Over spray here and there and areas sprayed over. Rear arches are on their way with moisture bubbles 2 inches up the panel. 2 inches above the arches. The near side sill has rotted through. The P plates to both NS and OS are rotted through to the inner wing. The NS floor near jackin point is rotted. Cannot verify mileage because the mileometer is broken. So last recorded mileage was in1997 at 16,944. The pedals say probably another 10K on top of that. Overall very poor paint job, in my eyes.

COVERED UP.

It's been treated with waxoyl and much rot has been sprayed over inc NS sill, oil still tacky, so done to sell to the untrained eye. Clearly been sat in a wet or damp area for the floor to start rotting to that extent. The top of the body is OK but tin worm evident on the doors, rear wings and inner sills, so pain has disguised it.

OVERALL

Very disappointed as I would be in my garage right now. I walked away due to what will be a restoration project for someone. It looks and runs great but the waxoyl is hiding a multitude of rotten bits. The seller was economic with the truth saying it had been in the family, it hasn't, he bought it from a non relation. I think its had a hooky MOT due to rotten areas.

It's still for sale if anyone wants it. I am gutted TBH.

Really sad to hear that. I hope it can be saved and I'm sure it will be but it certainly doesn't sound quite as honest and genuine as the advert would have you suggest. Perhaps this is the reason for the lack of information in the advert. At £600 I'd be tempted, but £1200 initial outlay before carrying out a full, and in-depth, restoration is boarding ridiculous.

I think it was waaay more than £1200......

All TBH price was over £2K. If it was £1200 I would have taken it and taken on the work. I have taken a load of pics and will load them up onto photbucket, anyone interested then drop me a PM and I will send link.

Oh sorry. Don't know where I got £1200 from!

Make sure you read update on its real condition, plus dubious mileage. Last official record 1997 16,984 miles. He knows speedo is bust so unsure how many miles its racked up since.
