Serial to USB adaptor

Featured Replies

Need an adaptor as my current work laptop doesn't have a serial port.

Does anyone have direct experience of ones that reliably and consistently work with HP Procurve switches and also Cisco kit?

I've previously been reluctant to look at adaptors and kept an old laptop with a serial port for this purpose. However that's no longer viable.

Spotted this one: http://www.misco.co.uk/product/110754/Startech-USB-to-RS-232-Serial-DB9-Adapter

Any direct help appreciated.

Cheers,

Steve

I've used one of those startech cables for a chip and pin machine and an old VAG-COM cable, but never with any switches.

Anything that's pl2303 based will work perfectly well and have stable drivers.

Something like this maybe, although you could probably find it cheaper if you hunt around a bit more on eBay

Plenty at my local Computer Fair the other week, you could give your local a try.

Thanks chaps. Need to be from a reputable source so I can sort a business purchase :)

So no eBay and computer fairs on this occasion.

Rapid have them, anly a fiver we use them on all our laptops for the CNC machines.

Maplin sell them, I have had several without issue.

Used the novatech ones to debug storage controllers and raid systems over serial (albeit a couple of years back now) but if they're the same, they're pretty stable. (windows would occasionally still BSOD if it decided to sleep mind).
