Charge Cooling V Air2Air IC's

Just thinking........

Why do you all want FM Air2Air Intercoolers when Chargecoolers are more efficent and will reduce your intake temps even further?????

Just a thought??

Bill's Ibiza has a charge cooler...IIRC...as a FMIC wouldn't fit at the time.

Not entirely sure but doesn't a chargecooler also plump into the radiator system? Has some kind of water jacket going around the core or something like that?

Perhaps these are more expensive?

Aye Charge Coolers Are Watercooled rather than air cooled!

whats the price difference?

Agree Beeftech, I have seen a charge cooler in action and works very well, it does have a seperate feed for water... well it did have on this car I was looking at, no problem with space on the fabia as it could all be mounted in the front bumper area.

Would of thought alot more expensive as well.

JWhy do you all want FM Air2Air Intercoolers

because they are all tarts and what a big shinney thing sticking out of the bumper :D

I remember charge coolers from my fiat uno turbo days! very affective......

because they simply aren't as affective as fmic's. they can't keep up at high load aswell as a fmic

The FMIC's are around the same price, mmm interesting time for a few questions on Club SE. If Badger bill is running one of these in his Ibiza with 360bhp they must be good and effective

I personally have a feeling FMIC will be great. Then perhaps a CC in addition, dunno if it would fit but as you've already done some moving of the water reservoir to fit your second SMIC in your you're obviously not afraid to go a little radical :D

Make sure you post back though, you're probably running one of the most high-power Furbys without NOS

BadgerBill is running a FMIC now, or at least he was at the JBS RR day a few months back.

He told me it was better than the charge cooler for track days.

IIRC the gubbins were still there under the bonnet of his Ibiza just not plumbed in.

Wonder how as FMIC require alot of air to be effective where as charge cooler don't as they use a water reservoir.

Jabba used charger cooler on Ibizas are there wasn't space or FMIC available at time.

Tiny thing as well.

I believe Bill used to pack it with dry ice for rr days. :D

But the heat still has to go somewhere. If you can't cool the water down at least as fast as the charge air is heating it up you won't get sustained cooling of the charge air.

An FMIC is simpler and I would guess more effective at getting rid of the heat provided there is a flow of air over it.

and on a track day theres plaenty of fast moving air to cool the IC.

That little statement is why I've hacked my bumper about so much. ;) I don't really care much for the car's appearance, but just want to get the most moving air possible running over the FMIC.

OK Nigel and Bryan, if there is fast moving air then the Charge Cooler is still going to be more efficient, gases as apposed to liquids are not as efficient transferring heat to and from heat sources ? Also Bryan the liquid in the C.C goes into a reservoir which also dissipates the heat, the liquid is usually a mixture of water and some other chemicals so it's heat dissipation properties are alot better.

Spoke to Bill this morning, he recomended a BFOFMIC, love that by the way. Charge cooler not so good on full boost. So Forge or Seat hear I come.

Any idea why it's no good on full boost ? It's just a clio 1.8 16v turbo converstion I have seen running 300bhp + uses a C.C. over the normal FMIC.
