strange noise...

Featured Replies

Ok...bit of a weird one.

If I turn the wheel left to any degree even even the smallest of movements I get a high pitch squeel, sounds a bit like when you get brake squeal but much quieter and happens when I'm not touching brakes.

Turning right and straight ahead is fine, no noises at all.

Any ideas?, ill be under car this weekend so any ideas of what to check an how would be much appreciated.

Stones stuck in the brakes/guard?

I though some thing brake related, but as they move with the wheel I was thinking more track-rod end or something.

Wasn't doing it this morning so it remains a mystery...

Mrs Pasty's car has started to do this at random occasions too

Power steering fluid level too low?

Will try bearing later.

Power steering level shouldnt be low only filled it week before last and it feels fine.

Why did you have to fill it?

Stones stuck in the brakes/guard?

This is really worth checking. I had it after driving over a newly tar/stone chipped road. The noise was anything from the slight squealing you describe, to something akin to Freddy Krüger trying to get into the car from underneath.

sometimes its the disc protector only bein a mm away from disc, the flex when turning makes it touch

also sometimes it can be something that happens when car is warm and is the disc pushing a little on one pad when turning (as they do) and wont stop until pads are changed.

On a majority of cases i have managed to cure brake squeels buy putting copper grease on all points of contact throughoutt the caliper (except pad contact faces of course)

Had to fill it as its hot a leak somewhere, also on my list of things to investigate, but last ran out over a year ago so not priority at the min.

Will give the wheel, brakes etc a look at later while ive got car on jack.

Cheers for all the suggestions!

Should the outer pads (the one you can see) be touching the disc at a slight angle?

Reason I ask is I had a quick look at mine and it seems the pads are in the carrier at a slight angle... on 312's by the way.

You are not confusing this with the angled "ends" (tapered) of the pads if they are newish?

possibly, but I didn't know it would sit at an angle? but still flat until the angle parts are totally gone. Everyone's telling me it's normal.
