VRS and Golf GTI.....financing and the tale of 2 buyers

Featured Replies

Once upon a time there was a VRS buyer called Victor and a Golf GTI buyer called Gaby

There were both keen on a good deal so went to drivethedeal for the best price....

Victor got really excited when he also realised that he could get 0% finance with a 10% deposit!

Anyway he tapped some numbers into his calculator and realised that the total cost of the VRS over 3 years was a tad over £10,573

Gaby had dreamed of driving a Golf GTI for a number of years now and to this end she had saved up £12,500! Wow a whole £10k more than Victor! This meant that with her decent deposit she could finance the remaining £10k needed with a loan at 5.1% over 3 years - total cost £10,787 (Gaby gets the £12,500 deposit back when she sells the car in 3 years time, this value is based on current GFV, but if she looks after it she will probably get more)

So Gaby only pays £214 more than Victor in finance costs!

Because of the extra spec and safety technology on the Golf her insurance premiums are cheaper so she easily makes back the difference.....

She gets even more excited when she realises that for an extra £900 she can have the Performance Pack and recover most of that cost at resale! AND she's gets a car that can muller Victor's out of the corners!

OK Gaby only has a 3 door but as well as being a good saver she keeps fit and doesn't need a massive boot to keep all her pasties in!

Victor likes pasties!

And that my friends is one reason why the new VRS is massively overpriced......

NB All characters in this production are purely fictitious but thought to represent typically buyers of the  aforementioned pieces of metal. Values used can be easily verified with a quick google search

Have a great weekend y'all!

So the Golf GTI buyer lived happily ever after. isn't that nice!!!!! Of course the PCP finance has to factor in the much higher depreciation of the Octavia than the Golf.

Yes the VRS is overpriced for that money the car should have navigation fitted as standard at the very least!

Bit of a bizarre eg in the op though. Why compare a paltry deposit with a massive one?

I showed yesterday that with equal £4k deposits and a 10% discount off list the Octavia would cost about £215 a month and the Golf £265.

The most interesting thing is that if you ignore finance and interest, the standard 5 door Golf gti is cheaper to purchase and run for three years than a similarly specced Octavia.

So to own a golf at the same cost over 3 years as an octy vRS you need to have an extra £10k in your pocket??? Great plan......

Or if gaby bought the vRS they could have it plus 10k in cash in their pocket??? Lol

Why keep comparing to the golf, the new octavia is passat size.

There is no Passat vRS equivalent?

Because it's got the same chassis, engine and pricing.

There is no Passat vRS equivalent?

It has.

Passat R36

Only it's 4wd and more powerful

The Passat is wider and longer than the Octavia, you could compare the Octavia to the Jetta in dimensions and looks.

I also like taking 5 large suitcases to the airport, or putting a couple of mountain bikes in the boot and passengers in the seats, or bringing a pile of furniture home from Ikea. Gaby can't do any of these things in her GTI, since she's got 210 litres of boot space less than Victor.

Like the marketing campaign a few years back, the vRS, is agile yet practical.  It's not a luxury badge, but its brisk and sporty, packed with features, decent sized, has lots of technology, track record of reliability and quality.

The only only other cars on the market that tick all the same boxes are more expensive...so on that basis, it isn't overpriced.  Still, it's more than I want to pay so that's a bit of a subjective opinion.

If you don't need a starship-enterprise sized barge then get the GTI..... Simples.

Yes the VRS is so slow..........

I would have neither, my next used car after my R36 is the Amg 45, NOW 345 BHP OUT OF A 2 LITRE Turbo is more like it rather than a paltry 207

No, if you negotiate a 10.5% discount of either car and pay cash, the Golf gti is cheaper over three years. Fact.

I worked this out against a five door old and a similarly specced Octavia.

The octavia's depreciation hits its value for money hard.

Just don't expect to achieve warp speed with it.

Sub 6 second 0-60mph in the real world should satisfy most normal people!

Sub 6 second 0-60mph in the real world should satisfy most normal people!

I don't know where you got the sub 6.0 sec from but the Golf GTI Performance Pack DSG only managed 0 - 60 mph in 6.5 secs according to Autocar's 10th July road test.

And the Octavia ( Skoda's figure) is 0 - 62.5 mph is 6.8 sec (take approx 0.3 sec off that to get 0 - 60 mph).

Surely to make the case even stronger in favour of the Golf, look at the price difference between a std golf 3 dr to 5 dr,( £655 ) add that price difference to the GTi  then - 'hey presto'  'issy wizzy lets get busy ' + any other magic phrases you can think of & the GTi is magically cheaper than the vRS.

Simple fact here is that the basic wheels & metal you drive away with from the dealer - the vRS IS priced cheaper than the GTi.

You missed out the third buyer. He bought a Leon 184FR and saved a pile of money ;)

I was talking about the example in this thread! all deposit against big!!!!

Put the same £2k on both cars and it isn't ;)
