VRS and Golf GTI.....financing and the tale of 2 buyers

Featured Replies

The octavia's depreciation hits its value for money hard.

Depreciation is the single most expensive cost in buying a new car, often overlooked. The VW Golf in all it's variants is one of the lowest depreciating cars in the market segment. The Octavia VRS will lose thousands more in 3 years so any PCP finance package, which factors in depreciation is bound to cost much more - even with 0% interest.

  • As a driver, I'd love a Golf GTI and all financial things being equal, would choose it (with performance pack) over the Octavia.  But, like Victor, I like pasties too!   I also like taking 5 large s

Which is why the Golf is actually cheaper than the Vrs to own for the first three years.

Yes the VRS is so slow..........

0 -62 mph in 6.8 seconds - Skoda's figures - is hardly quick is it!

I don't know where you got the sub 6.0 sec from but the Golf GTI Performance Pack DSG only managed 0 - 60 mph in 6.5 secs according to Autocar's 10th July road test.

And the Octavia ( Skoda's figure) is 0 - 62.5 mph is 6.8 sec (take approx 0.3 sec off that to get 0 - 60 mph).

Those are the official figures. Both cars will do it quicker. In either case, they're not slow.

Please re-read my post. the Golf's figures are from the Autocar road test.

Agree, not slow - but not particularly quick either. I would have hoped that the Golf GTI with the performance pack and DSG should have been 6.0 or slightly better.particularly when a reasonably well equipped GTi is nearly £30k.

Correct. And by a large margin.

260BHP Cupra on the way ;) Should be worth the wait :)

Three door tiny car, no ta. ;)

If you need the room the Octavia is the best, clearly. But to me the Octavia makes a lot more sense as a non-performance oriented car.

Compared to an average 10-12 sec car yes it is. But to a proper fast car no lol

I would discribe it as a quick car personally

Compared to some cars yes, of course that's quick. it's quick compared to my Octavia 2.0 diesel - but that doesn't pretend to be a performance car. But the Golf GTI / Octavia VRS is not quick for the money being asked. A decently specced Golf GTI performance pack DSG is the wrong side of £30k. Even an Octavia VRS can get on the wrong side of £30k if you go mad ticking boxes on the order form. both are then in BMW M135i territory money wise - and that car has over 300 bhp from one of the finest 6 cylinder engines out there and 0-60mph in 4.6 seconds. Different league altogether performance wise for comparable money.

Yeah without a doubt. But options are indeed options you don't need to buy them. It's a quick £22k car options are a personal choice.

That said how expensive is the BM if you go mad with options? Lol

I do agree tho the RS3 merc 45 and BM are a different league but doubt at all they are the same customer bracket.

Running costs of the others are vastly different for anyone looking at 3-5 year ownership for a start

The base Golf GTI 3 door, manual transmission no performance pack in fact no extras at all is £25,845. Ouch. Too expensive and not quick enough for the money. As always the equivalent Octavia is probably better value. But I don't see an Octavia as a performance car, and I don't particularly like the Golf.... Don't ask me why, I wouldn't swop my Octavia Elegance for an equivalent Golf even though I don't need the additional room and accepting that rationally the Golf is the better car with its more sophisticated multi link suspension and undoubtedly better residual value.

so thats great ..people can afford a golf gti..what happens if you need a big boot?

I dont get the argument.....ones a small hatch,ones a big hatch

you buy a big car if you want a big car..you buy a small car if you want a small car?

as somebody has laready said..I think the leon cupra will be the sweet spot in the entire VAG range this time for pounds to performance ratio

Clearly if you need the room the Octavia is the way to go, no brainer and no argument from me at all. I'm debating value / performance nothing else.

Not everyone us ruled by size when buying a car tho lol

Yea do agree. Performance family car at best but they are hard to place now with the new ultra fast cars by Audi BM and merc. Muddy waters lol

Golf Gti is an oddball, if it wasn't for PCP nobody would buy these cars!

Give it a few months and the deals will be better still. "New" cars that have just been launched are always hiked up in price.

I think the Octavia makes perfect sense as a "hot" family car. For the size and practicality there are very few alternatives(in a similar price bracket).

Audi S3 sportback is currently on drive the deal for 28.5k. Ummmm very tempting...... Bet the mgfv will be quite chunky.

Gonna take a lot to stop me grabbing an M135i for my next motor tho :-)

It's amazing value for money, no doubt about it. And it doesn't 't have the front wheel drive compromises that come with higher powers either (torque steer, too much understeer, excess front tyre wear). Not much room compared with an Octavia of course, but better than the 1st generation BMW 1 series, and better built as well.

The post was to point out that the Golf Gti v Vrs debate misses out the best value of the 3. the Leon. For space the Octy wins hands down. For value Seat have taken skodas crown imho.

I'd be surprised if it didn't go faster to be honest. Still plenty fast enough.

Not bad. Audi do seem to have high interest rates over 6% just like VW though.

As I said, if you buy using cash the Golf will work out cheaper than the Vrs over 3 years owing to lower depreciation.

The vrs isn't cheap at all once you factor in three years' depreciation.
