Felicia 1.9d tachometer stuck

Featured Replies

Hi,

I did find something about this on a previous thread - but I didn't quite understand it. The tachometer (?mile counter) has stuck on my 2000 1.9d felicia - in fact it has been stuck for the past 2000 miles. Is there any way of getting this to work? Or does it have to be replaced?

Thanks for any help! :-)

Does the speedo work?

Tachometer malfunction can have multiple causes, from bad wiring to bad instrument panel. One of the most common cause is missing the signal feed from alternator. Diesel engines don't have an ignition system, so tachometers rely on pulses coming from one of the alternator pins, marked W. That pin is connected to Diesel management system and also to tachometer. Check if you have good connection between W and tachometer. You have to take out the instrument cluster, disconnect the yellow connector from the back and check continuity between pin 7 of yellow connector (yellow/green wire) and pin W on alternator (also yellow/green wire). If continuity is OK... bad news. You need a new instrument cluster or a professional to repair it.

Thanks, guys!

the speedometer and the rev counter both work, but the mile counter and the ticking over thing that you constantly reset doesn't. I did replace the alternator a while ago, so it is highly probable that I did do something to the electrics...

Just looked a bit closer at the image...it's the odometer and the trip counter that don't work...my mistake!

I was afraid my big bright yellow annotations will not help speaking a common technical language...

Anyways, now that we know what you're really talking about, I believe that some of those plastic gears inside the speedometer assembly are stuck or worn-out.

Yes i agree with that, it's purely mechanical, it's driven by gearing down the drive from the speedo cable. They just wear out sadly..

Thanks for your help, guys. I'm tempted to leave my car as permanently being 104, 000 miles "-)

Don't you just love cheap plastic on cars?

But on the other hand I personally had a similar issue from trip counter reset button being pushed rather heavy.

Probably my fault then... but I may be tempted to get the screwdriver out later and have a look...

I had the trip counter stick after resetting once but I don't think that stopped the mileometer at the same time. A quick jab of the button got it going.
