vRS - Petrol v Diesel

Featured Replies

And so the heart vs head quandry begins when deciding what vRS to own next time.

Think ive made my mind up now though.....pretty much think the TDi is the one you'd choose with your head. A pretty quick car but mixed with 60+ mpg capability, 119 CO2 rating and better residuals would make it quite affordable to buy and own. An excellent company car choice for sure.

However.....the new TSi manual emits less CO2 than my current CR DSG, also whilst im sure in reality it wont quite hit the mark its forecasted mixed MPG capability is only a couple of MPG worse too. Then theres the fact that the petrol one is both a fair shedload quicker and more fun in the real world.

Glad I bought my Blackline for all the free additional spec but had I factory ordered id almost certainly had bit the bullet on a TSi i think.....next time round will defintely be the case I think if I have another.

I dont even really have the requirement for an estate this time round so TSi manual hatch for me...if theres a next time of course!

So what of the rest of you? Interesting to hear whats hot and whats not from everyone else.

Exactly my quandary if I go for the mk3

I'd go for the petrol. Personal preference though.

I think petrol is definitely more befitting the car. I like my MK2 diesel but without doubt it looks quicker than it goes...real world despite the additional 30hp, 22lb ft torque and DSG its not massively quicker than my old Golf that frankly looked pretty plain.

I also think there is a couple of things that would annoy me about owning a MK3 vRS diesel.....because of the exhaust situation its now physically possible to tell diesel from petrol...liked the fact with the MK2 that everything was identical except the rev counter. Also the noise generator thing is bound to get on my nerves....I wouldnt buy a diesel and expect it to be artificially made to sound (probably quite badly and unrealistically) like the petrol....pointless. something like this on an M135i for instance that makes an already magnificent noise even better yes but on a diesel skoda...no thank you.

Problem I really have right now though is the value for money the new cars are offering....none basically.

Fair enough I cant expect to get the equivalent of a £25.5k car for 20k like I did with the run-out Blackline but from my experience care of the 0% offer my dealer at least would offer no discount on the car. Im sure that will change in the comming months as I can foresee sales of the new car being slower than SUK hoped as a result of their new "premium pricing" strategy but if they dont start to play ball im not even sure Ill buy another.

The VRS petrol is worth going for as the quickest Octavia petrol available here is the 1.4, but the diesel is hardly any quicker than the normal Octavia with the 150 bhp engine it seems to me so why bother?

Quite right Tim. Im not entirely sure I believe the early literature on the TDi though; one of other official sources (the brochure I believe) suggests the new car can hit 62 in 7.8 secs; given the Leon can do it in 7.5 would suggest that's fairly accurate.

Also not sure this apparent weight difference between the 150 and 184 vRS is entirely accurate either, the engine wheels and seats has to weigh a hell of alot more to make up the difference wouldnt you agree?

Also totally agree with what youve said of hot hatches and the M135i....to add insult to injury my Dad has ended up buying one!

Can't wait to order an m135i tbh. For the extra few K it's gonna be on another planet performance wise. SWMBO has decided she wants to keep the furby vrs indefinitely (and it will be all paid off early next year) and in exchange has given me the green light to order the m135i once I get bored of the Abarth.... Happy days!

If I was on the market for a sportyish diesel vag dsg I think I'd consider the Leon tdi fr 150 dsg over the Octy as £££ cheaper and prob not a lot slower

Petrol.

12 months before I change mine, but I'm not sure what I'd go for next.  A bit underwhelmed by the new vRS and no idea at the mo whether I'll need diesel or the other stuff due to changing work situation.  As I've said previously though, I do like the Alfa Guilietta.

In the UK a petrol engined car as diesel is not cheaper than petrol which it is amost every othe country in the world.

As there is now decent performing Skoda diesel then unfortunately have to look at another marque.

Are there any really quick (0-62mph in 7 seconds or less) diesels for less than £25K?

Don't put too much emphasis on 0 - 60 mph times with diesels, this isn't want they are about. Diesels score with strong mid range acceleration which in the real world is much more useful unless you regularly participate in traffic light Grand Prix.

I took out a manual petrol VRS today and it was VERY nice!  it got 40mpg on the motorway and quite a bit less on twisty a roads.  I couldnt really tell much difference between the sport and eco mode but i kept it in eco on the motorway and it trundled away nicely, no cruise though :(

im looking at 15-16,000 miles pa so still looking at the diesel but is a petrol realistic at these miles?

At that mileage pretty marginal I would guess, probably down to which you prefer driving. If it was me I'd go for the diesel if buying with your own money, not only will the consumption be much better, but the depreciation will be far less than the petrol engined car.

Just a thought though, the performance of the diesel VRS isn't much better than the standard 150 bhp diesel found in the SE and Elegance, better equipped ( Elegance) cheaper to buy ( SE ) and cheaper to run, tax and insure than the VRS. But without the more extravagant styling of course, if that is important.

Balls to the floor acceleration to the red line is all that matters, mid range grunt is for tractors.

Possibly an absolute bottom spec BMW 123D but only just.

The best 2.0 diesel engine there is though!

Petrol - no longer do the miles to warrant the extra cost of diesel.

Yes brilliant engine, had one - the only snag was paying nearly £300 per run flat tyre....it's now the 125d and I believe run flats are an option thankfully.

Everything depends on how much you drive? running not so much it pays with a petrol engine ... However, I think myself that a diesel engine is always more fun to drive.

Well I saw a blue vrs estate at a dealer today, it had plates on and was being moved off the forecourt as someone had bought it and didn't want people climbing all over it.

Sorry wrong thread!
