My quick test drive review of the VRS petrol estate...

Just drove the DSG petrol today to compare with the manual. It didn't feel as racy and in sport it held the gear way too long. I would much prefer the DSG for motorway with the Adaptive Cruise, but it didn't feel half as fun on normal driving. I think the manual wins it for me in this type of car. The manual felt so natural, the DSG felt a bit too unexciting. I can't ever get used to the flappy paddles anyway because they are useless on roundabouts or tight bends.

I also tested the lane assist which felt very strange. It kept me in lane, but I kept thinking I was too far left - quite interesting though!

  • Yes, I'm a bit of a fan of 4WD too.

  • No worries, I had a 3.0tdi Quattro coupe so sub 6sec to 60 with some mods and I loved it!! So hoping the vRS is good as it might be an option next year

What makes you say that?

What makes you say that?

Because If you have to move your hands on the wheel you have to get your hands back in the exact position on the exit of the roundabout to change up again. It is a pain that the paddles move with the wheel. Which is why in high performance cars they don't or they have a much wider paddle.  Also you have to be "in a gear" so driving to a roundabout is awkward with paddles because there is no freewheeling that you can utilise with a manual. It is just different, but quite evident. The manual gives you two options - either in gear, or not in gear (clutch depressed), whereas the DSG is in a gear no matter what. It is just much less flexible when driving aggressively. You can't utilise engine braking as smoothly either.

But why would you want to be not in gear at any time, especially when driving aggressively? Same with a Ferrari 458 (example), double clutch gearbox, so you can't be out of gear and shouldn't be really. You should be using your power-train for as close to 100% as possible, even if you're just engine braking, which you can do easily in S.

I do agree on the paddle size, one mod that I'd consider would be changing to something larger.

i currently have an s-tronic (DSG) gearbox but to be honest the paddles do take practice and they are not ideal for as said roundabouts or tight hairpins. you can use the gear selector for time like this but can be an issue.

For petrol cars i would imagine there is less of an issue due to the much wider rev range so you can get it in gear and usually have plenty reves to use before needing to change gear. with a diesel the powerband and rev range is so small you often find you need to change up mid steering and this is when paddles arent ideal.

that said it might not be too much of an issue on the 2.0tdi fwd as your limited how much power you can put down mid or leaving a corner. my 4wd 3.0tdi can run out of revs very quickly in low gears due to accerleration

Yes - my point was the VRS is a sporty thing that I think the DSG subdues. I could drive a hell of a lot quicker in it in manual than DSG. I love the DSG and have had one for 3 years, but for pure driving pleasure (for me) it doesn't come close to a nice manual gearbox.

out of interest do you have a trade in? :)

sounds like a nice car indeed, you going for hatch or estate? :)

Estate

DtD don't do trade in. So I will buy my Superb from the PCP at the end of the term and sell privately. Put down the lowest deposit as it is 0% there is no point in a big deposit... :-)

Sounds decent, is that 0% PCP or (I think) the 2 years 0% finance?

i wasnt sure if after drive the deal put you thru to the dealer they would take trade in there after as a side issue

Congrats, that's a nice spec. Have you considered the panoramic sunroof on the estate? Do you have it on your Superb?

Oh and most importantly, which engine and gearbox? :)

Did consider the sunroof, not got it on my Superb. Went against it on cost really - not sure I would use it enough. I still *might* change my mind as I am awaiting a cost list of add ons.

Manual and 220bhp petrol engine... :-)

I asked DtD about trade in but they said no.. I don't want one anyway...

It is 0% PCP.

Its there but none of the options appear for the vRS so you cant spec it up at the moment. At least they dont appear for me.....

Same. Hopefully they'll appear soon.

I rang them today and they should have the options up tomorrow. Although they said you can order anyway by just letting them know what you want and they will price it up and contact you.

Just looked myself. Options list is not on yet for the VRS. How did you manage to spec it?? I rang up and DTD said it will be up in a few weeks. How long is a piece of string??

Agreed - thats a brilliant price! Fully loaded up. Similar to my ideal spec + columbus and Canton. Just over 23k for that makes me laugh when people say 'but it isnt good value for money anymore' or 'how much for a Skoda Octavia'?!!

I got a print out from a dealer of the options list and checked that against the configurator (they matched). DTD said yto just fill in what I wanted in the comments section and indicate the it was an enquiry - that way they could get somebody to get hold of me to confirm final price...

I just called DtD, who said it would be 'some time this week' before options are added to the site.

jakeyc, where exactly are you adding this info?  The 'contact us' link doesn't give an email or enquiry option, or am I just being dumb here?

Complete your details on "order car" - then half way down where it asks for your deposit select "enquiry only" (you won't need to give deposit). Then in the comments box put in your spec you want.

That's what I did - if I don't get a call this afternoon I will call them in the morning. I did this 3 years ago for my Superb and it was so easy...

Cheers mate.

EDIT: I've now done the same.  Looking forward to hearing what they have to offer.

EDIT 2: I've also inquired with Carfile and AutoEbid.  The latter say the car will be available on their site from the 2nd of August.

OMG it drives better  than A7 also i cant believe this

I just found the A7 boring to drive. Yes it was fast (3.0 diesel 240bhp) but it didn't have any involvement. Yes nice inside, but it didn't grab me.. I could easily walk away from it (which I did)....
