Beam deflectors stickers? Trip to Europe

Featured Replies

Hi there again,

I have an Octy 2005 elegance 2.0 PD I believe I have the winter pack as mine has the steering wheel controls as well. Now I'm planning to go to Europe this coming Thursday. Do I need to get these beam deflector stickers or can I just dip the beam as low as it can go? I don't believe I have Xenons on the car either.

Many thanks

Arthur

I'd personally get the stickers - I know that the Europeans love to blind us Brits when they come over to the UK, however that is no reason for us to be anti-social in response!

Stickers online are cheap and cheerful, fitted in seconds and easy to remove once you're back on UK shores.

I believe it is also possible to "flat line" the beam on your vehicle. I'm sure someone else will be along to tell you how, that does mean manually adjusting some bits and pieces and you'll need to reverse what you've done once you get back.

On a side note - I love the ability you have with the newer vehicles, Xenon's and Maxidot. A few clicks on the menus, European driving selected and the lights automatically flat-line - ah, so easy :)

search for headlight adjustment. it tells you all about it

They come off very easily, I keep a small bottle of methylated spirits to clean the residue glue off, just melts away.

I drive down to Spain four times a year, they are essential.

You stand a good chance of being prosecuted if you don't use them

Is there not an option in VCDS to flick them to euro setting? Although id be tempted to fit stickers anyway as i wouldn't like to stand their arguing the case with a foreign copper. P.S. Make sure you take 2 breath test kits if your going through france.

Sounds scary

Already have a pack sitting at home. £3.99 of Shebay.

4 Hi-Vis vest must be in the cabin as well.

Will only drive through France for about 20km as I will be going towards Holland and then Germany.

Flat beamed my Octavia earlier this year. 8 days spent in France and had no problems with Le Fuzz. Even followed a Gendarme for 30 miles on the motorway without issue.

Actually not really a requirement.

In January this year the French government suspended indefinitely the fine for not carrying said breath kit. So in theory a requirement, however non-compliance doesn't get you fined.

The breath tests are no longer an issue - and in any case the fine was only ever about a tenner (less than buying two tests in many places) so I've never bothered.

No actually. France only needs one Hi viz vest to be carried in the cabin- but more may be sensible if you intend to break down on the autoroute. . Other countries require them for all occupants- so being a 5 seater you will need????

The AA web site has a table showing the compulsory and recommended items for EU.

There's a whole lot of stuff you should have.  Sparebulbs - whether they are roadside fitable or not, fire extinguisher, hiviz per person, warning triangle and so on.

You should also have with you at all times, all the paper work relating to the car and yourselves, ie passport.  No under 14's in front.  It is required that you lock your car doors in Germany when staitionary - not sure how far you are allowed to go.

I was "fined" entering Germany for not having a GB plate.  The fine was having to buy a 2/6d sticker for 16Dm.  It is a requirment under the terms of the Geneva Convention, rather than euro law.   Most plates I see in western Europe have country identifiers on the reg plate now, so perhaps no one bothers after Schengan, open borders and all that.

I am not happy sticking anything on polycarbonate.  It is very susceptable to long term damage.  I have occasionally bothered to flat line the h/l, but normally just turn the height adjuster down.  So far never been stopped or hassled.  But then, I have only ever been treated with the utmost politeness if stopped - 4 times in appoximately 500 disembarkments.

Aye - the idea here is that the vest is worn by the one person who goes to the boot to retrieve the vests for everyone else in the vehicle!

So if you're planning on breaking down make sure you do have vests enough for all occupants, but only one for the driver needs to be in cabin.
