Stupid question: How do you start your car?!

Featured Replies

Hello,

Iam sorry if this question is naive....but I have never had trouble like this before! How do you start your octavia FL?

First: there is a strange sound (which I think is the fuel pump) once you turn the key, should you turn then or wait for the pump to stop? (usally after 3 seconds)

Second: Do you turn the key ALL THE WAY to the end and release or just turn till the car starts?

The reason I have this headache is the car nowadays never warms up by itself in the morning and Iam guessing iam starting it up wrong or something...

sorry for the bad english...

What do you mean by "It never warms up by itself"?

On my FL i turn key to 1st click - wait for the sweep of the needles on the clocks to complete ( less than 1 sec) then start.

If you are saying that the temp does not get to normal after about 5- 10 mins of driving or it shows lower than normal - then you may have a temp sensor issue.

Does zico900 mean it wont idle until warm?

I think he referes to the yellow glowplug light(coil light), as the outside temperature is higher the light in the morning or after long stop of engine, will only come on then off, 1 second or less.

Thought it was a petrol engine he had, fuel pump noise?

In this weather I turn key and start straight away and don't wait for the glow plug light. Never had problems.

Thanks for the help everbody

The car is 1.6 petrol 8v (old engines for stupid contries)..i mean when you start the car the first time in the day...shouldnt the rpm raise itself to around 900 for a minute then it lowers down automatically to the normal rpm range...it never does this anymore...is it because we are in the summer or what?! I had a 2010 seat ibiza with 1.6 petrol 16v and it always raised its rpm automatically on first start of the day....even when the weather was 37 c

AH!   i think this is about the automatic choke, which on cold days runs the engine slightly higher till it is warm enough to run at 'normal' idle speed.

It is surprising that the ibiza ran the engine at the slightly higher revs ( choke on) in such temperatures.

zico900 - I personally wouldnt be too worried if this is your only concern- as long as the engine is starting quickly at the1st turn of the key. If you are having to hold it for 2 seconds or more waiting for the engine to fire up, Or the engine is cutting out / running ruff when sitting idling then you have a problem.    Hope this helps ?

Thank you! I also was guessing that it was due to the high temp of my city....

When you start the car do you wait for the warning lights to go out ( usally 2-3 seconds and the sound of the pump stops) or just fire it up in a flick?

Re the fast running I have been told the car runs harder when cold to get the cat up to temperature, I believe there's some euro crat legislation that gives a time by which the cat has to be up to temp & working

As soon I open the drivers door, I can hear the fuel pump going.

Then key all the way, then let go when engine fires to life.

I usual get in and turn the key till the dash lights come on.

Put my seatbelt on, then turn the key all the way to start the engine.

Just a habit from previously driving diesels and giving the glow-plugs a few secs to heat up.
