Upgrading Intercooler

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone,

I've noticed my stage 1 mapped, with cat back exhaust and Neuspeed intake- is struggling a bit with these temps (I know it's only temporary).

Having done some reading it appears the standard intercooler can struggle with even a stage 1 map.

Now I'm looking to upgrade. I have 2 choices- either a larger THS intercooler to replace the standard one. Or, run a Forge Twintercooler.

I'm slightly confused by the Forge one, I can't see how adding extra pipework and linking two intercoolers can be beneficial. However, the Twintercooler does take air directly from the front of the car; where the THS version is still sandwiched between the aircon rad and radiator.

However, the THS version is larger with a reduced pressure drop due to the design of the cores.

Which one would be best for a stage 1 Octavia vRS TFSI running a standard turbo?

Thanks for any info.

Many just go for an S3 intercooler as it fits straight on I believe.

I know what you mean about the Twintercooler. If it were me and I had the cash I'd get the THS as it's bigger than the S3 one and gets very good reviews.

whats your budget?

I was thinking about £600.

Sky is the limit then mate, how far do you want to tune the car also?

I ran a forge twincooler on my vrs 2.0tfsi running stage 2+ because I was having big heat soak issues, after it was fitted we took some intake temp readings and it was like night and day, the difference was very good it ran cooler intake temps all the time, I know fitting a different cooler (forge or THS) doesn't increase power but it does stop you loosing power through heat soak, The THS is a good product but its very heavy compared with the standard one or S3

If I had to do it again I would not hesitate to go down the forge route again just because I know it works well, I think the reason behind this is because it sits right at the front low down with nothing in front of it. Phil

Ah! Now you're making me want a Twintercooler! They look so good also.

I'm looking to add a 200 cell sports cat DP; and HPFP. I think at that point a stage 2 map will be all that's required.

That will be plenty of power for me.

Just out of interest, if it's a straight swap, would an s3 intercooler make any difference on a stock vrs? I know it doesn't increase power, but would you get any benefit from the horses that came out the factory?

What's the deal with the s3 one anyway; I know it's the same chassis, but is it just bigger but with the mounting holes conveniently in the same place or something?

S3 will make a difference even on stock, it may gain you a few HP/LBFT, but the bigger benefit is not loosing power when things are warmer, or you have been giving it some!

If it were me, I would say S3 is all you need up to Stage 2+, maybe even K04.  Ideally from K04 onwards you should be looking at the better coolers, APR/Revo, Forge, THS etc.....

what you can do, is go S3 first, and then if you keep tuning the car, you can add the Forge Twintercooler later, which is what I would do if I go past K04 tuning

In this weather the S3 intercooler is insufficient with a K04 IMO.

The Wagner offering does look good! Nice to see some data backing up the intercooler.

It's a toss-up between Wagner and THS now! Decisions; decisions!

Thanks to everyone who has replied so far.

Okay, well having come from a history of supercharged golfs, I get the mechanics of intercoolers and seeing as I've only got a 1.8 and it's out of warranty, I'm kind of tempted to look into an s3 intercooler for my motor, so is it applicable to my car as well, and is it literally a straight swap, one part (the intercooler) and that's it??

Any idea of how much I'm probably looking at if all this is feasible?

In this weather the S3 intercooler is insufficient with a K04 IMO.

I was kinda interested to see how it would go myself in this weather but can't say that I have felt any negative effects so far with just the S3 cooler.

Would agree that S3 coolers is sufficient initially and then perhaps go with the Twintercooler if heatsoak can be felt. I had stock + Twintercooler on my previous TFSI K04 and it was fine. Folks talk of the throttle response being a bit dulled by higher volume intercoolers - my current TSI is a tad more responsive but I couldn't say if that was it not having the Twintercooler or just the newer engine.

Well I've ordered a Twintercooler from awesome. Will fit it as soon as it arrives!

Hi Everyone.

I've read about upgrading the Octavia 2.0 TDI intercooler with an Audi S3 intercooler and it would appear the fitting points are the same. This seems very interesting because the S3 part is apparently a no brainer fit, given the bigger capacity of the S3 intercooler.

Now its been a long time since anyone made any comment on this as an upgrade. My question is has anyone done this recently for a mk2 Octavia 2.0 TDI FL and what S3 intercooler did you use? Presumably that was an S3 at a certain point in time was it not?

Guidance and real life info welcome here. Let me know your story, and whether, in the end, got satisfaction from your efforts.
