Hard and soft cut limiter

Featured Replies

Are there any advantages/disadvantages of having a hard cut limiter? Apart from potentially the popping and banging on the limiter?

A hard limitter is exactly that; when you hit the ref limit it cuts all fuelling (diesel and maybe petrol) and sparks (petrol only).

A soft limitter (aka a governer) just reduces fuelling (and changes ignition timing on petrols) so you can hold the engine on its limitter pretty much indefinitely. It's also what VAG use as standard.

Any advantage or benefit of one over the other?

So on theory a soft cut allows you to run at max speed where as a hard cut just cuts out?

Get a hard cut limiter you'll love it.

i think that's the plan, personally I just like the noise lol

just wondered if there was an actual benefit or advantage

I use it to my advantage. coming out of corners in 2nd, the 'bounce' off the limiter usually gives your tires grip again, without having to let off :p

not sure whether its true or not but i read on another site that with the pop-ing on a hard limiter it can cause the actuator to be opening and closing which can result in damage

Has anyone got a sound clip of the hard limiters? Quite a few of my old cars would pop and bang, miss it with having a diesel

How do u do this to ur car?

It's added during a remap :)

Cheers dan. Sounds awesome

Soft cut limiter for anybody that has some mechanical sympathy/understanding of the damage the hard cut limiter can do ;)

Hard cut limiter for people that prefer the noise and are willing to take the risk of the damage it can cause :)

Soft cut on mine after trying hard cut, felt like the engine was going to drop out! :)

Advantages for the drivetrain repair industry.... Lots. Advantages for the discerning individual - Couple a pops... iniit.
