Hellraiser, the cams upgrade looks pretty impressive at 22hp. Does it have to be done along with other upgrades or is it an exclusive upgrade gain? Are the gains in the lower or higher revs? Also, any idea on the cost?

How do you guys feel about the comsumption though.

Top speed for the 1.6 is listed at 118mph (about 188km/h), but beware that the speedo overreads, so the needle will be around the 130mph mark at this point...

I'd imagine the cams could be done on their own, though for best results the air intake would probably need improving. You'd probably be best checking with the cams manufacturer/fitter though. If you go for a longer duration (eg. fast road), then it'll make it sluggish in the low revs, but improve top end.

Cost would be about

Interesting point of the speedo overeading. Does it do it at lower speeds as well? OR only at speeds in excess of 150km/h? Would be a worry if it was inaccurate all the way.

Appreciate if you kindly clarify though that when you refer to the cams, are you referring to the camshafts? Also, whom can I contact regarding this and would the overall reliability be affected?

Am sure that the golf, bora and octy are similiar in most if not all aspects though, I have been unsure as to whether they share the same autobox as well? Any inputs on this?

Thanks for your replies.

It's a 4 speed box right?

Pretty sure the boxes would be the same unless the VWs have a 5 speed.

The speedo tends to over-read, as there are laws about it not being allowed to under-read, so VAG tend to steer on the side of caution. The error is usually about 10% on mine, though I tend to just use my GPS device now.

Yeah, replacing the camshafts with some racing ones. Shouldn't think it would have an impact on reliability, but despite my enquiries I'm no closer to knowing! :(

Rob.

pcmg: The seller actually will let you decide on the duration of the cams and will ask you what kind of performance you expect to gain from your engine. The most common camshafts for the AKL are Shrick cams but I'm not sure if I should post a vendor on the forum (I think it's against the foru rules).

Nah, post it, not like you're advertising or spamming or anything, and it would be useful to know!

Go ahead..

.....make my day;)

Sure here they go:

1. The head, cams and chip can be had from www.TSR-Performance.com

2. Cams can also be had from www.polo-gt.co.uk

3. Pipercross Induction kit can be found at www.larkspeed.com

4. Supersprint makes a complete exhaust including a polished manifold.

5. www.mjdesignsuk.com has some ignition cables.

You can probably find more places just by entering "AKL" in a popular search engine (such as Google), though you will have to wade in numerous "other" websites.

what saort of power does that little lot give you in total?

If I have a custom Chip done, along with an Apexi Super AFC I can probably muster around 180hp NA without tearing into the engine. If I go the whole way (rods, crank, pistons, porting, polishing, etc.) I think it will be no problem getting to the 200hp mark NA. Just did a conversion in American dollars (not including shipping or shop work) and it totalled around 1,005.96 pounds without the exhaust from Supersprint or the AFC. Pricier bits are the cams and the head.

sounds reasonable....

Robm i hopy you are reading this...

I am. And if you want to sponsor the modifications and insurance, I will quite happily adorn my vehicle with adverts for your company... :D

Rob.

I wish I had the parts installed myself. I meant in my post that I made a currency conversion to American dollars, not a conversion on my car...not yet at least:shocked: I'll probably be amassing the parts along X-mas with some tranny/ brakes and suspension bits. A 180hp Skodi with rear drums does not seem like a good proposition:drive:

I prefer the term "exciting"... :D

Interesting thought though, that for less than

I need help with Clutch parts though. Will a VR6 clutch and pressure plate work on the stock 1.6 tranny just like on the 1.8T tranny? Is their an LSD?

Does anyone know how much the stock 15 inch Alloys weigh? I was thinking of replacing them with some Enkei RF1s that weigh around 15 punds each. Can someone calculate (or give me the formula) to find out rotational mass? I'm also planning on some Toyo RA-1 tires, anyone know of any other nicely priced R compund tires with good treadwear?

Hello there, lovely to hear that there is indeed a sure way to increase the power on the 1.6 without breaking the bank. Am wondering though as to how I can get the parts over and have it done in Singapore? Do they ship overseas and with instructions? Will have to check with our specialists here as to whether they'll do the labour. I heard that the chip only gives about 10hp. Is that correct? Also, any idea on the estimate gains the other mods give individually? And in which RPM range? And BTW, rob and Hellraiser, are yours manuals or autos?

Tata for now

Mine's a manual.

The chip on it's own only gives 8-10bhp, but with different cams and intake it would probably make more difference. Quite hard to estimate the gains for doing each mod individually, but the more of them you do the more difference each will make.

I don't know if intake and exhaust will make much difference to anything other than responsiveness, cams (depending on which duration you went for) would increase torque from around 1500/2000rpm, upto near the top end...

Rob.

Mine's alos a manual.

Best gain from a chip is to get it from the same manufacturer (TSR) who you will get the heads, and cams from. With further information like exhaust, headers, and intake they can probably burn a custom chip that would make a better increase than 8-10hp by taking into acount the new difference in air/gas flow because of the new mods.

Mines's an auto. Had to opt for that as it just got too tiring after work to shift gears the way home. The autobox is very smoooth and if you like some shifting, you can still drop a gear or two manually.

Its a pity we don't have such specialised tuners for VWs here in Singapore. It would be quite a hassle for me to ship the ECU over and then to have it back. It would make the very important testing and finetuning way too cumbersome.

Hopefully our tuners here will open up more options for us in the future so we can spruce our babies up.

Any ideas on fixing a supercharger? I don't figure why VWVORTEX has one for the 2.0l but not the 1.6l. I'm pretty sure the demand would be there with people like us around.

On another note, have any of you guys felt any difference when using super premium fuel like SHELL's VPOWER? They seem to boast quite a bit about it and I'm quite sure that is some fact to that. I have been using 98 Fuel though have just decided to try VPOWER for a while to see if it makes any good difference. I guess the effect would be the equivalent of installing BROQUET. Any inputs on BROQUET?

Hope to hear from you gentlemen.

Tata

I guess VPOWER is the same as Optimax here. It's rated at approx 98.5%.

Optimax is subject to much debate e.g whether or not it gives the resultS the ads say it should.

Personally I feel that my car is more responsive and smoother. However I have had a bad tank of it before (Optimax is basically unleaded petrol which has an additive put in once it's delivered to the garage; it is unstalbe and can gove RON figures of less the unleaded i.e 95 RON).

I am running one tank unleaded to 3 tanks Optimax and the difference can be felt. My car is remapped and on unleaded although it is smooth in power delviery (which I found suprising) it does feel "flat" compared to running with Optimax.

Just MHO.

Cheers.

Adrian.

to add further fuel to the optimax debate i may only have an 8v fabia but the difference with it is impressive the car seems to be more responsive and will continue on accelerating up the rev band (up to 4500 rpm) top end speed is also easier to reach (95-100) and the car seems to rev better it is well worth the extra money:D

Couldn't really tell any difference with Optimax, except it cost me more to fill up and a bad smell came from the exhaust every so often. The 1.6 over here is tuned for 91/95 octane fuel, so I don't think there's any benefit in using higher octane stuff.

BROQUET looks kind of interesting, if it does what it claims it would be a good thing. The only thing I'd wonder is, if it really does all that, why haven't car manufacturer's jumped on the idea and fitted them at the factory - would really boost fuel economy and allow it to go in a lower tax bracket with lower emissions!

Not sure on fitting a supercharger in a 1.6 over a 2.0 - not sure how different the head is on the 2.0. Don't see why it wouldn't be possible to fit one on the 1.6 though, you'd just have to adjust the amount of boost so it was low enough not damage the engine... :)
