I get the impression it's more like a bell curve - if you got a new air intake, the results wouldn't be that stunning. If you got new cams, the results would be good. If you got both together, the overall results would be much better than implementing either individually. If you then got a chip, the gains as a result of already having better induction and cams will be greater than just a new chip alone. But yes, it does reach a point at which the gains are negligible...

Of course, you're still going to be spending the best for of

Lovely to hear from you guys and after using VPOWER for a while, I have noticed better fuel economy and a smoother engine. Will continue to evaluate it for a while.

On another topic, I can't help but getting annoyed over the amount of noise and vibration the cabin gets when goin over speed strips, with the effect coming from the rear. It seems to be quite an intrusion. Still haven't brought it into the dealer for a check as I haven't had the time. Any inputs.

Regards

Brandon

I'd blame the speed strips myself...

Mine was very noisy, especially over speed bumps. I though it might be the rear seats but noticed that the door locks were very dry, I put some oil on them and the car is a lot more quiet now (I also did the boot lock aswell.

So it seems that I'm not the only one experiencing this. Could thus be an overall manufacturing fault that is not being looked into. The sound is very annoying and very unbecoming of a new car. It keeps making you think theres something loose at the back. Still waiting to hear what my dealer has to say though.

On another note, will be bringing my car in for its 15000km first service soon and am expecting the engine to be smoother and more economical after this. Any inputs Guys?

My engine runs very smooth, barely audible at idle. As for economy - depends a lot on how you drive it, if I boot it about I get around 27mpg, if I am crusing on a motorway I get around 40mpg.

Rob.

the 1.6 16v in the lupo and polo gti is 125bhp

Yeah, it's an 8v in the Octavia...

This might not be what you want to hear, but I can't think of anything that would be changed/adjusted (as a part of the service) that would make any improvement. If you believe there is a specific problem I would point it out, it may require investigation/diagnosis, beyond the very minimal attention that the service is likely to give.

Dont' get me wrong Paul. The engine has been wonderful and is as smooth as silk. Just imagining though as to how better it could get after the first service.

True, it is very silent at idle though it does get quite audible with that droning noise at speeds above 60mph.

Inputs.

Get a better sound system... :)

I know what you mean Rob but sometimes I like to listen to soft music and well, a reduction of the DB would be most appreciated. Its thus safe to say that in general consensus, the DB levels above 2500rpm are pretty audible. It sure doesn't reduce the appeal of the car to me in any way though. Just something worth pointing out.

Rob, are you running 15 ,16, 17 or 18 inch wheels? If any of the larger ones, do any inputs on the amount by which they sap the power, thereby reducing the acceleration speeds.

Brandon

Running the 15 inch steel wheels - was going to try some 17 inch vRS wheels on them to find out how much performance they'd sap, but they got sold before I had a chance...

Rob.

This is a wheel alert for Rob, who is looking for a cheap set of (17") vRS wheels complete with unworn tyres. Would members please keep an eye on For Sale and Wanted for him and PM him as soon as a set of wheels is offered for sale. We don't want him to suffer the same problems that *** had in being pipped to the post each time wheels were advertised, do we? rolleyes.gif

This public message is brought to you courtesy of your user-friendly Mod.

:D

Not after them as such, as I like having cheap wheels that take cheap tyres... ;) Curious to try them though, see what differences they make...

The original Octavia 1.6 engine was 75bhp. This was replaced by a 102 bhp 1.6 and a 75bhp 16v 1.4 from the Fabia after the face lift.

In the original Octavia there were 2 1.6s.

A 1.6 75bhp in the LXi and a 102bhp in the GLXi.

In the facelift model the 1.6 75bhp was replaced by the far more modern 1.4 16v 75bhp.

Yeah' date=' same cover as the Octy, though the VW badge has been swapped for a Skoda one... ;)

And yes, I noticed Erik was advertising 215bhp out of the 1.4 and 1.6, but I haven't bothered asking as I doubt I could afford it... :(

:alien:

i would really like to know about erik advertisin

please tell me about it

i can afford it

Send a message to our member Erik@AAT asking about tuning for the 1.6, and he should be able to help you...

1.6 8v is 100-102bhp depending on application. Engine code AKL. It originally appeared in the VW Polo Mk4 and replaced the 1.8 90bhp in the Mk3 Golf/Vento in late 1996. Engine carried over to the Mk4 Golf/Bora. Usually has a big plastic cover on the top with 1.6SR written on it.

1.6 16v replaced the 8v for MY01 in the Golf/Bora with 105bhp and same 109ftlb torque. Engine code AUS. It has lower emissions, improved fuel consumption over the 8v. No plastic cover, looks similar to the 1.4 16v with the plug leads on the top. Automatics continue to use the 8v engine. Other VW brands started using in mid-late '01. The 16v is a different engine, most likely a development of the 1.4 16v, parts are not interchangeable. The 1.6 16v in the Lupo/Polo GTi is 125bhp and has VVC IIRC.

I've got a 8v in my '99 VW Bora, my Mum's got a 16v '00 Golf. Performance is very similar. 8v has more low down torque and is quieter. I've added a K&N panel filter to the Bora, which improved throttle response and fuel consumption and adds a nice raspy edge to the sound. The 16v uses a different airbox/filter.

How many miles did you have on your standard air filter before you changed to the K&N?

Did toy with the idea of getting a panel filter, but I'd been told the standard VAG filter, when relatively clean, wasn't all that restrictive...

The filter was about 2000 miles old, engine was on 14000. VW specify changes every 20000 miles for the air filter. The K&N's been fitted for 28000miles. It's the same part as fits the TDI90/110's.

The engine's more happy to rev over 5000 rpm with it fitted and fuel consumption went up from 33 to 36mpg average.
