Turbo dead - Skoda wanting

Featured Replies

hello

need some advice with this please.

our 2.0tdi octavia turbobooster is dead, clogged up and needs a new one fitting. verified by a VAG garage and skoda.

the car has just gone 3 years old. it has been serviced every year at the same skoda garage, and done 60k miles.

they have spoken to skoda uk and are offering a 'deal'

we have to pay the labour cost and they'll pay for the new turbo.

they claim that the turbo costs £1000 and the labour takes a day and will cost £500.

so, basically, we'll have to pay £500 to fix this.

now at the moment, i'm working with a load of engineers who know that refurbed turbo's cost about £400, they're made by garrett.

so, what do you think about the turbo price and does it really take a day to re-fit one?

i think not.

honestly, its not great value.

high quality rebuilt turbo will be under 500 quid plus oil lines so 600 quid tops all in.

labour would be about 4 hours so if the 500 is inc vat it may not be that far off at main dealer labour rates. independent would likely be around the £250 for fitting id imagine

so, what do you think about the turbo price

What, £0.00 for a recon turbo? Fantastic value ! (They do normally retail at about £1k from main dealers.)

Seriously though, if £500 is an all-inclusive price grab it with both hands. Beyond that, who cares who is technically paying for what and how much. Let Skoda's accountants worry about that. Its costing you £500 in total, how they split the rest of it is their problem.

The bottom line is you are getting a recon turbo with a 2 year guarantee fitted to your car at a main dealer for £500. I doubt an independent could beat that by much, if at all.

As above I would be very happy to just pay £500 :)

I'm with Nick and Stormchaser...

I work in a garage mate .good deal IMHO. I would let them do it.its more than 500 brick trade for us to get a new spooler off TPS (dealers supplier)..

hi folks

many thanks for your replies.

we will go with the skoda deal, i'm just annoyed that they think i can be fobbed off with some nonsense prices. if they'd been more honest, then i'd respect them more...

Its another reason to have full dealer service history, otherwise you'd have been told to go forth by Skoda.

My turbo was done at 65k for the sum of £1231.... i had to pay it all :-(

If turbo is "clogged" then it sounds like it just needs an overhaul - remove, strip down, clean and refit.  EGR is the key reason for gunked up turbos.

My mate works for a local Skoda - shown him this post - bite their hand off! W

Agree with Jason too. I bet a good clean up of the turbo and it would be like new again :)

Agreed but not something a Skoda dealer can do.

But they aren't nonsense prices, circa £1500 is genuinely what they would have charged to fix this if you'd driven in with no service history. Just be thankful you're only paying a third of it.

i have a full service history from new at the dealer where i bought the car!

skoda are claiming that a recon unit costs £1000 - it doesn't, i've had a quote from a leading turbo supplier for £400 retail.

skoda also claim it will take a full day to refit, at a cost of £500  - i work with a load of engineers who say it should take 3 hours max.

so my beef is not with the price, it is with skoda artificially inflating the prices of item and labour...

i will pay the £500 to do this, it comes with a year warranty, but they could have been more honest about the prices.

also, 'just be thankful' you say - the car is 3 years and 3 months old! this should not have happened, i'm not thankful about any of it to be honest,

The price for the Skoda unit will be much higher than a third party re conning a unit, that stands to reason. Its not take apart by a third parts they are remanufactured by Garret, if it is amrecon unit you have been quoted for Labour time for the turbo is just over four hours. Parts price should also include new gaskets and nuts, oil feed pipe, oil and filter which in most cases comes to around £100 on their own.

a6rnh as above £ 500 is a good price and a fair compromise.

Were your previous services fixed or variable?

turbo's are normally exchange to get refurbed one back, they just recon your old one and stick it in to the next man

get it down to Skoda rapid before they change their mind.

Ive had a turbo replaced on SWMBOs Leon, labour alone at an independant would be half that, and then you have to pay for a replacement turbo! trust me, you are getting a good deal, take it!

If you need a turbo and its out of warranty, that is a brilliant deal. As the others said, don't worry about how the price has been broken down. 500 for a replacement turbo at a main dealers is a super deal.

I agree that this shouldn't happen on a 3 year old car with FSH and 60k on the clock, but unfortunately the 2.0 BKD engine has become well known for turbo problems and Skoda are really acknowledging this by agreeing to do the work for £500 instead of the full retail price.
