95 or 98 RON for vRS

Featured Replies

..... i think its the quality of the fuel you put in rather than the RON number that really counts if you want it to run well...slightly reduced power/torque output of not.

Spot on. At the risk of repeating myself I'd much rather use Shell 95 RON than Supermarket super unleaded.

People need to understand the companies selling the supermarket fuels aren't run by the Red Cross. They're not doing you a favor and are not doing it on break even. And they can only sell cheaper fuel if it's cheaper to make (ie. it has less/none of the good stuff in it). This is if you don't want to believe what the chemical engineers are telling you, think about it from the economics point of view.

I'd rather not pay more per litre and get Less per mile because that's my experience of 98+ron/premium fuels.

But not my experience I'm afraid. If the manufacturers recommend 98 RON I use it, if they recommend 95 RON then that's what goes in the tank.

The car that showed the difference up most for me was a Honda S2000 which had an incredibly highly tuned and high revving VTEC engine. Didn't like 95 RON at all.

Our octavo (fsi)says 98. Sure it's livelier, but at the expense of mpg.

You also have to remember if you lined up 10 exact same cars, each would run better on some brands than others.

Previous octavia loved Texaco. Current one runs like crap on it.

Same with the Mondeos and Sharan. Sharan loves sainsbury, hates shell & esso. Previous mondeo hated sainsbury & total, loved esso, one before that hated BP, loved everything else.

....and who says cars don't have personalities?!!!

I guess it's the same way people like different foods. Some love Chinese, others aren't fussed. Some like me hate Indian food, others can't get enough.

Mother in law hates pizza, and my daughter hates icecream - jezza kyle dna test on order

My mk1 vrs runs loads better on shell v-power 98. It says in fuel cap 95/98 it runs on 95 but no where near as responsive and when it was mapped, the 95 was a definate no go

Sent from my iPhone 4s

Checked on the fuel cap today and it says 95 not 98(95) so mine will be running on 95.

Correct choice, as it would be a complete waste of money using fuel with any higher octane rating.
