Skoda tested Octavia3 RS with 4wd

Featured Replies

There was talk the VRS was to be 4x4 when the Octavia 3 thread started, before becoming the Mk3 forum.

This is quite different to standard haldex setup though. Where haldex is a sort of permanent 4x4/quatro system with equal distribution between front and back unless traction in front wheels is lost completely, the article discusses a setup where up to 100% of power can be transferred to back wheels resulting in Octy becoming true RWD should the driver chose to do so.

I thought the latest Haldex did that? ie. it is the same system but up to 100% of the power can now go to the rear axle.

So I'm guessing my translation of this is not the best but I read it as market research said there wouldn't be a market for it.....what market and who carried it out a drunk dog?

I'm fairly sure that a 4wd vRS has be desired since the mk1 let alone the mk2.

Now 25k for a vRSR that would be very tempting

That isn't an accurate description of how haldex works.

Haldex on the Yeti, and I'm sure most 4th Gen versions and I think 5th gen is not like that.

Around 96% of the power goes to the front wheels. When it detects slip it transfers power to whichever wheels have grip. In theory if only one wheel had grip then the power will go to that wheel. The 4% is due to drag in the Haldex clutch.

From rest I believe it is about 50/50 power split, which is why in the wet a Yeti/Scout/4x4 Octy will just shoot off the line while 2wd cars get bogged down with traction control or spin their wheels. Great for the traffic light GP

Correct! ;) From rest, despite what a couple of others have posted, you don't get slip from the off - it already has power to the rear wheels and moves off smartly. Haldex four as fitted to fl scout and all Yetis is pre emptive. Haldex 5 as used on the new platform has the same function :)
