Side strips... my experiences

Featured Replies

Last night I spent two hours removing the side strips from the passenger side of my Furby. Unbelievably difficult to get the gummy residue off the bodywork - lots and lots of lighter fluid, and a massive blister along the length of my right thumb.

When I saw the car this morning, I didn't like it. That crappy plastic side strip actually makes the car look better! I don't know why. But it did look very tall and bland without it. And living in a moderately ****e area of East London, I don't want the sides of my car exposed to the Primera / Lucida brigade.

So I went down to Halfords and bought some trim repair tape and stuck the strips back on. I did it in the car park because I'm very impatient (and they are on straight)

My advice to anyone wanting to do this is don't - it's not worth the hassle, unless your car is decked like Mil's or Josh's.

I agree, although I havent done it and wont do it (dont fancy dings on my doors) without them it looks to plain...

But, each to their own :)

"Classic" comes to mind! plus it helps to see what modle it in in the distance and the black strip looks alright i dont mind it! my doors are protected! :)

I did it a while back and I love it!

The slight kink in the doors give the impression of the line that the strips made too obvious, and especially on the red vRS it makes the car look much nicer from the side in my opinion. With the front and rear vRS bumpers losing the black strips, it seems to give a much better overall aesthetic to remove them on the sides too. (perhaps a little 'old Ibiza' in it though)

But I am constantly scared of dings and dents. None so far though, touch wood.

Took me about 20min with a hairdryer and a long extension lead on a hot summers day. (not including washing it, but almost all the glue came off with the strip)

I did mine pretty much as soon as I got the car, so they came off really easilly with only a little warming with a hair dryer.

Mine was a year old when I did it (2nd Hand) and they came of really easy too.

not a fan of side strip removal myself as it makes the sides look plain and slab sided. The side strip helps break up the side view

Must be a London thing.

Leave the strips on, removal makes the car look like a tarted up Classic!! How about getting them body coloured?? On my Comfort I'd like to get the bumper and side trim with the chrome edge like on the Passat Highline.

Was thinking about this, but I reckon it'll look crud after you've had a few door knocks crack the paint.

Might give it a go sometime anyway. Maybe spray them myself and get a bodyshop to do the lacquer.

Chrome could look good on the right car!

Each to thier own indeed.

Lost me their?

I am going to leave to strips on as these are for the benefit of all the other idiots that park beside you and open their door onto your car.

I have a bit of an issue with the driver side doors since I had the strips removed...I'd taken it to the dealers to do it (it's extremely hot here, i've had the ride 2.5 years, so you can imagine how difficult they were to remove)...before getting those removed I had the driver door and the rear door behind the driver resprayed under warranty for paint cracks...so they resprayed the doors...but they din't remove the god damn strips. when they did, they covered it with paper. Idiots. So after removing the strips, when you lok up close, it is clear that there is two layers of paint. This will be taken care of when the car goes in for service soon, I've already informed them about it and they've agreed to do it since it was a poorly thought-out job. The passenger sides are just beautiful, I haven't had them resprayed before so it's one smooth layer of Black Magic paint.
