Oil light

Featured Replies

My sons car oil light came on last night. He topped up the but it did not go out then parked it up. First thought was oil pump but it is fine today have not moved it and will now drain the excess oil (doh). If it was the pump why would it be fine now?

As he parked it up last night there was a different noise and it seemed. To go into limp home mode for the last 100m.

So this has baffled me.

07 plate FSH and about 65k miles on the clock.

Any ideas anyone?

What car / engine is it?

2.0 L&K diesel

Superb 1. Writing of I pod is difficult.

Red oil light?

Yes that is what he told me and confirmed this morning.

Well removed nearly 3 litres of oil!!! so slightly overfilled. The turbo's bearings are very noisey once you switch the engine off and the message (in red) about oil pressure and switching off the engine only happens if you rev it. I drove it to his house on tick over revs in 2nd and 3rd gear with no message (at least the car is safe on his drive way.

The oil does not feel contaminated with diesel and the engine has done 56k miles (2.0 ltre diesel Superb 1 L&K, 07 reg).

Could it be the oil pump (plus turbo) or just the turbo?

As there is no warning unless you rev it.

Oil pump has failed or failing, turbo is the first thing to give up so will need both but you will need to check for top end damage,

The oil pressure warning will not come on at idle, the light only comes on over certain revs anyhow.

Why does the oil pressure light not come on at idle if the pump is broken?

Because Teutonic philosophy dictates that you will not be fully informed of any conceivable or apparent design weaknesses. Examples:

Oil light not functional at low engine revs, otherwise it would be on as the filter bowl fills following an oil change. (Pity, it gives you even less chance of salvaging their lousy 2.0PD engines when the oil pump drive fails).

Black dipstick means you cannot see how sooty the engine oil is. (The fact that you can't check the level easily in the dark seems to have evaded them).

Temperature gauge on dashboard indicates the same value over a wide range of coolant temperatures. (Almost impossible to diagnose a faulty thermostat or a loose water pump impeller without VCDS or an infra-red camera).

You just have to accept these idiot philisophical design details and understand how they arose. I still curse having to take the spare wheel out of the boot in order to check the pressure. Numpties.

most likely pump failed, very common problem on 2.0pd

Rotodiesel, thank you. I was hoping that no oil pressure light meant the pump was ok and the sump was filling up due to regen/injector issues. More money for my poor lad to cough up (well me to begin with).

Got some very good advice from my dealer, Capitol Skoda, Newport on who to go to for repairs.

Well got the car back two days ago with a new turbo, £774. Shaft had snapped. The oil pump hex drive had "rounded" but appears not to have damaged the female drive section so only £3. The engine was apparently the later modified oil drive system.

The extra oil in the sump was all the re-gen oil so another £151.

NO Computer errors shown!!! It would at the time only state stop engine problem.

9 hours labour £432 plus above and other bits total £1470

The garage was a local VW specialist near Newport, South Wales who seem to know their stuff andwere recommendedby various sources including my dealer.

Have told my lad that if the light comes on STOP immediately, as he did drive for nearly a mile by which time the turbo was knacered. This will save the new turbo then it will be another £960 for a new oil pump plus fitting. I know it is taking a chance but it is saving £960 at present.

Another one bites the dust...

"Modified to the later oil pump drive system" - what a joke.

The 2.0 PD in the Mk 1 Superb is not fit for purpose.
