Yeti vs Renault Captur (What Car review)

Featured Replies

Picked up "What Car" the other day whilst the missus was perusing the aisles in Sainsbury's (every little helps and other supermarkets are available). The feature on crossovers had the usual culprits (Ford Kuga, Nissan Squashcow, Yeti and the new Renault Captur). The reviewer seemed rather biased tbh. The Yeti Captur was marked down for its 1.5 litre diesel, which they admitted was underpowered and the Yeti was marked down due to lack of "Infotainment System" that the Captur had. Result = Yeti second place.

Now is it just me, or were they being a little silly putting electronic gimmicks ahead of actual real world performance?

  • They Yeti is lacking in this area, no compact cassette and won't even play an LP    I'll get my coat....

  • I've tried Googling "Nissan Puke" and "Nissan Squashcow" and can find absolutely nothing.....................I've never heard of either of them   :(   I wonder if Nissan owners slate a "Skoda Petty"

What the heck is an 'Infotainment System'?!!!  :@   (I've long wanted to put that one in!)

PS I don't think I really want to know.

I think they mean tw*t nav and audio system etc.

The Yeti was a 2.0 110 CR.

I didn't buy the mag btw.

+1 to all above!

Yet once again I cant resist the urge (all in good and humorous will), so regarding ... windows, I have this to say:

No matter what people tell you windows are like chocolate! There can never be enough!  :giggle:

I' m rather glad windows are not like chocolate!

1. They would melt in the heat.

2. Generally speaking chocolate is not particularly transparent. :-/

Does that coat have long sleeves that buckle together at the back? :giggle:

Oddly yes, a kind gentleman in a white lab coat gave it to me for free, he even made sure that it fitted without me asking.

Never heard of a "Captur" & I usually keep up to date with most things automotive........time for a Google....Oohhh, Matron.

Just had a Google, feeling much better now.

How can anyone put this ahead of a Yeti, it's nearly as ugly as a Nissan Puke & that's saying something.

Does it even have awd?

well it looks like the media unit in the Renault has a colour screen.

It probably has a couple of "apps" in it too.

If you say the word "app" to a media type, they p*ss themselves like an excited dog

Don't forget my 78s'

I wonder if Nissan owners slate a "Skoda Petty"? (Donning flame-proof coat as we speak)

Just a thought   ;)

I do, for my sins, subscribe to 'What Car', and this is the full version of their verdict

No but they probably think that some Skoda owners are petty and childish. And they'd be right.

I have done so too for about 10 years or more, but this year I've stopped, really for two reasons. First the actual original content (reviews etc) has become less and less each month, with the space taken instead by repeats of essentially the same content (eg the top 20 buys in about 10 different classes of car) - just gets boring and very predictable after a while - or by arty filler pieces which have relatively little to do with car reviews.

And second, even within what's left the technical content and value of the reviews has deteriorated sharply. There used to be detailed acceleration figures, for example, for each full review but no more and the database in the back has become progressively more devoid of useful content. Add in the fact that reviews of the same model but appearing at different times often seem wildly inconsistent with one another (is the wind noise bad or is refinement excellent, for instance)and I came to the conclusion that there was little that I could get from WC that wasn't also available from the makers' brochures.

Seems to me that Autocar is the only properly useful car mag left.

Completely agree, I susbscribe to Autocar. Used to regularly buy What Car? but got fed up with it being inconsistent from one month to the next. Their verdicts are also often out of kilter with the rest of the motoring press.

Having said that, the Captur is on my shortlist as a rival to the entry level Yeti. Having seen one, it is nothing like a Juke. Renault build quality is in a different league since Nissan taught them how to manufacture and the four year warranty/servicing/assistance package is attractive.

They also might have a sense of humour though - like most of us

Hardly HIGNFY material  :)

Their sense of humour may be a bit more grown up though

I was looking at a captur on friday, as well as many other vehicles, and it really is not my cup of tea.

The main "infotainment" binnacle looks like it was stuck on from another car and doesn't look like it belongs to this car at all.

I also banged my head on the door frame getting in and out (same with the 2008) and i'm hardly a giant at 5'9".

It is no longer on the "to be considered list".

It is a pretty poor effort for the money asked.

Mind you i was rather underwhelmed by a lot of the vehicles i had a look at.

Plenty of other motoring forums use similar terms.

These are from just one of the 4x4 forums I inhabit:

Nissan Cashcow

Nissan Squashedcow

Nissan Puke

Nissan Joke

Ford Kukie

LR Freeloader

LR Ewok

etc.

It is not just here, so I think that any criticism of us in unfounded.

I'm not singling out Yeti owners (but for those who have the cap, please wear it), I just think the misnaming of other brands is totally unnecessary, and, dare I say, juvenile, whoever and wherever they do it, on Briskoda or any other website

Bit in keeping with my thread criticising the bandwagon climbers who refer to Halfrauds, and the stealers

Oh that's ok then, please continue.
