Yeti vs Renault Captur (What Car review)

Featured Replies

What the heck is an 'Infotainment System'?!!! :@ (I've long wanted to put that one in!)

It's a phrase used by Skoda in their own literature for the Octavia III, so not anything peculiar to 'What Car' magazine

Further "scientific research" came up with this...

so it could be something like "infobava"?!?!  :giggle:

It is not just here, so I think that any criticism of us in unfounded.

I think it's fair to criticise it wherever it happens if one finds it tedious and unfunny. The "but someone else is doing it too" argument is as spurious here as in the school playground or the courtroom.

Personally, though, I favour "Yoda Sketi" as it conjures up images of a childhood hero eating a foodstuff (the tinned Heinz variety) I particularly dislike. ;)

The misnaming of car models has been going on for years.

I can remember the first Sierra's were called the Ford Jellymould, the Ka was referrred to in the trade as the Kak, and many times all Dagenhams products being "Frauds". The Model T had all sorts of misnames when it became common, and few were polite!Even the press have deemed the Prius as "The Pius"

You will never stop it happening.

Hasn't  there been an example where a manufacturer has actually changed a name because of a reported misnaming?

I was looking at a captur on friday, as well as many other vehicles, and it really is not my cup of tea.

The main "infotainment" binnacle looks like it was stuck on from another car and doesn't look like it belongs to this car at all.

I also banged my head on the door frame getting in and out (same with the 2008) and i'm hardly a giant at 5'9".

It is no longer on the "to be considered list".

It is a pretty poor effort for the money asked.

Mind you i was rather underwhelmed by a lot of the vehicles i had a look at.

I'm 5'5" (talk enough to be a police women) so not a giant :-)

My theory about the qashqai is that some folk don't know how to spell it so they make up another word  :giggle:

That's probably the right answer  :)

I used to be on qashqai and then juke forums and honestly never saw any made up names for 'rival' cars.

Ford Pinto 'pinto' is Brazilian slang for penis.

Opel Ascona in Spain where ascona is slang for lady parts ;)

VW Jetta in Italy. (no 'J' in Italian, so pronounced 'Ietta' meaning 'misfortune')

Many others I'm sure.

Mitsubishi Starrion?

Good for Renault, it seems that they've produced a car that competes with the Yeti and gets better reviews than it.  This should really be a good a thing, as it may cause Skoda to raise their game and sort out any shortcomings with the Yeti.

I've fixed the Yeti's shortcomings, you saw the small mod we made :D

Just had a look online at the Captur, it looks more like a rival to the Juke than the Yeti (in my opinion).

I don't fancy it much to be honest, aside from the tablet like media system and the funky colours.

agreed, it does seem more aimed at the Juke market. Don't Renault and Nissan share some things (Nissan/ Renault van)

Thought so; platform is Juke/ Clio Mk IV

even uses the same diesel engine.

The Nissan Qashqai (Dualis in Japan and Australia) was referred to as the "Cumquat" by James May on Top Gear last week - made me smile. It's great fun :-)

I wouldn't expect anything less from 'Top Gear'................they think they're so funny

Actually, I looked first at a Kia Sportage but the only 2wd diesel is the 1.7 which wasn't quite man enough for our caravan. The 2.0 was 4wd (awd?) and at 22k a bit too expensive for us.

The irony is that my last car (Octavia 1.9 tdi 105pd) was chosen because the Yeti lineup omitted a 2.0 2wd at the time. Thank goodness they tweaked the range for when it was time to replace it.

The Opel Nova - "doesn't go" in some latin dialects.

Toyota MR2, or, with French pronunciation, "emm air duh", sounding remarkably like their word for faeces.

Slightly off-topic, back in the 60s or 70s a UK cosmetics firm was surprised to discover that a body spray called 'Mist' did not sell well in Germany. In German, the word means **** (or merde in French since I'm not allowed any letters of the English)!

I have driven a quashquai (or however it is you spell it) & its like driving a Sofa Absolutely ideal for Speed bumps as they dont seen to exist for this car.

I thought the KA was a goldfish bowl -after someone sealed the car up - took out the sunroof - filled it with water and a few goldfish.

Also a bit off topic, At work we have a system of pre defined routes for trains.

It's known as :

A utomatic

R oute

S etting

E quipment

They don't think things through sometimes

I believe Mitsubishi had to do a rapid name change of their Pajero (Shogun to us) in some South American countries where it meant 'a gentleman who enjoys pleasuring himself'

Even the press have deemed the Prius as "The Pius"

I think you will find the Prius is known as the "Pious" Graham... for obvious reasons.   :giggle:

Adjective
  1. Devoutly religious.
  2. Making a hypocritical display of virtue.

Another unfortunate example of linguistic degradation: up until very recently, 'pious' had no negative connotations at all (and still doesn't, according to some dictionaries).
