  • I bought the same wheels for my winter set, also put on some 205/46 16 SV-2's    Sitting at work waiting for it to get a bit colder.

  • Nice. But I wanted these:( Lol

I assume these are the wheels I sold Andy last year, so they have made there way back to Cumbria.

Yep Simon, same wheels.  Think you'll find it was almost Two and a Half years

Was it really? Doesn't time fly when you are having fun.

I bought some SV-2 's the other day, £57.20 each in 205/45 16 sizing to go on my Seat wheels.I also have a second set of wheels for our C1 with Goodyear Vector Four Seasons. So i'm all set for the winter :)

cool. I've used SV-2's for the last 2 winters, and they work well, not as good in normal temps by some way, but as soon as you get below freezing they are great, its weird, the colder it gets the better they grip, good on snow and ice too... they were my first experiance of winter tyres, I will review the goodyears when I use them through the winter :)

Hey Dave,

I need to revive this thread as just done the same, I've invested in some alloys for winter and they would really benefit from a DIY refurb.

These are they:

9A8AF179-09AA-4079-8B26-9E17797CACA5-250

486CC7B7-9C64-4227-91C6-6FFD2DE29C9E-250

Would you be able to post up what paints you used and any advice on how you got the nice even finish.

Also if anyone who's clued up on paint can chip in, I'll take any advice going as this will be a first for me.

There are also some medium weight kerb scuffs on the outer edge of the alloy, what would be the best process to smooth these out?

Thanks

Edit: also how much did you need of each prod.

Also, underneath the cover, the wheels look like this, I fancy that will take a small Skoda centre cap and might look liner than painting the old centres or far in around trying to source Skoda ones that fit.

Re Lacquering,

Depending on the Paint & Lacquer being used,

its quite usual to apply a final Colour Coat thin and then a lacquer coat on when wet and let flash off,

then lacquer straight away.

But it is dependent on the products being used. a up to those painting.

Agreed ...with the solvent base coat I use the direction is to lacquer within 1 hour, which I suppose is to give the best adhesion.

Coincidentally I'm just painting my winter wheels, but as topcoat I'm simply using some satin black cellulose paint because I had it "in stock",so no lacquer necessary.

...and another thing.

The wheels I have are vRs mk1,so 6.5 x 16 and I'm tempted to go for 195/50 rather than 205/45,but undecided as yet, depends what's available.

Thanks XK, the plan will be to run 195/50/16's on these for winter to gain a bit more tyre wall I think and lift the edge of the alloys a little further from the road, I'm curious how this will affect ride comfort and handling.

The Seat Leon Cupra wheels are 7 which is nice for optionsj and checking on willthey fit.com 195/50/16 when fitted to these wheels is only-0.93% out on the 205/40/17's fitted on the Gigaro's.

Some other interesting options are

225/40/16 with +1.6% out

215/45/16 with -0.68% out

205/45/15 with +0.83% out.

So in theory all of the above tyre options are open.

I'm on 205/45/16's but 215/45/16's are a common size used....

I bought these......

e-tech black alloy wheel paint, and laquer, with simoniz primer....

I bought the paint and laqer in a pack like this...

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/E-TECH-Motorsport-Black-with-Lacquer-Car-Alloy-Wheel-Spray-Paint-4-cans-/271145927808?pt=UK_Body_Shop_Supplies_Paint&hash=item3f218e8480

and the primer seperate... this one

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/grey-primer-Simoniz-acrylic-Car-Spray-Paint-1x-500ML-simp11c-/150820353669?pt=UK_Cars_Parts_Vehicles_Other_Vehicle_Parts_Accessories_ET&hash=item231d97f685

its VERY important you get it right... if (like me) you were painting wheels that were already finished in silver, the ACRYLIC primer is VERY important, as this gives the proper base for the paint to "attach" to correctly....

then the pack of paint and laquer did the job after, I followed the instructions to the LETTER

again, I think its important to prepare properly, clean the wheely properly, and DRY them properly.... then make sure you correctly apply the correct primer, then the correct number of coats of paint, allowing them to dry between coats (not long, about 10 mins) then they had to be left for 24 hours, before the laquer went on....

by just taking my time, and following the instructions to the letter, (and using the correct products)  I have awsomely finished wheels, that genuinly look like they have been professionally refurbished!

I have lerned my lesson with things like "rushing it" lol.. I rushed my fly eye on my rear lenses, and they look crap up close, ... next summer I will remove the light units and do them properly!

Good luck, and post up your efforts!

heres mine!

I've got a set of those Leon alloys in my garage for track wheels

I can't advise on the tyre side really but I have now done 3 DIY refurbs so can help in that department

Have a throgouh read of

http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/188435-pastyboy-diy-alloy-refurb-and-recolour-project-thread/

and potentially

http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/235637-pastys-new-alloy-project-finished-fitted/?hl=%2Bmontreal

the same questions you asked were asked in both those threads and it should provide a useful guide if nothing else.

I did consider recolouring my Leon alloys but due to the small spoke gaps decided against it as it's be a load of work and pretty hard to get right given my poor spraying experience/technique

The other option might be plastidip or similar.

These guys  http://www.cardipuk.com/we-dip-your-car/ do a "pack" specifically for alloys (essentially a primer and 4 tins of spray) http://www.ekmpowershop28.com/ekmps/shops/cardipuk/neon-aerosol-packs-x-5-400ml-cans-241-p.asp

This way you can spray them, use them for the winter and not have tworry about how you shift a set of luminous green wheels, you just peel it off and sell them as silver....

If you feel like parting with the centre caps let me know ;)

oh, and I made the mistake of painting the bolt seats :( I will need to be reg re-torquing as the paint will wear and loosen the bolts :( MASK the bolt seats lol.!!!

What is of importance in painting alloy wheels is that if in the preparation you get down go bare alloy you then put a primer coat of etch primer to cover the bare metal.Ordinary primers/ undercoats that adhere OK to steel do not stick as well to aluminium alloys.

On the other hand, after one good coat of etch primer you can then build up with ordinary primer/ filler, which is cheaper.

Thanks guys, big helps, much appreciated.

Had read the thread and seen on the bolts Dave cheers.

Let's see what happens

So

Clean

Sand

Etch Primer

Filling Primer

Colour coats

Lacquer

That cover it?

Great thread links btw Pasty, really useful.

You may also need some stopper to fill the imperfections you haven't noticed before the colour coats.

The other point worth makiing is why bother with rattle cans when you can now get a small compressor and spray gun for as little as,say,£75.

More economical in the long run,you spray the paint thicker so less prone to runs and generally a better finish....and you can inflate your tyres as well!!!

Had my winters refurbished and powdercoated for £16 each!!

Now that's a bargain!

:o

excuse me? How much?

Ok interesting Chris, just spoke to Cas Coatings and they do offer the gobsmackingly good price of £16.00 a wheel exc vat

They say that this is just a paint coat and claim it doesn't require lacquer, what's everyone's thoughts on this?

£24.00 a wheel for metallics

50% increase again for lacquer/clearcoat.

That does seem silly cheap....the downside being is you have to go to Bradford.

Look to be a family run powder coaters.

What's wrong with Bradford?

I had mine done in black but if refurbing the main alloys, I would have then lacquered too @ 50% extra per 18" alloy

That would be £27 each

Downside....You have to take them without tyres fitted

I had them taken off and then rebalanced with new valves after the refurb for £50 the set of 4 by Castle Tyres in Bingley

Tip: Pay cash and avoid VAT!!

LOL...I love this Forum!!
