how hard is the crash bar to get off?

Easy, held on my a couple of screws and 4 bolts. I'm not sure what they are though. I think they're called star drive and they're pretty big!

They are M8 multisplines iirc.

Got mine off with a normal torx bit, found the best fit and gave it a try and they came off pretty easy.

you might have been lucky there. Torx bits can easily round the spline heads, especially if they're tight.
