Haldex/Diff

Featured Replies

Some of you know I have a 2002 4 motion MK 4, when I got it there was an issue with the rear diff/haldex, it presented by making a horrible grinding noise when driving and eating tyres.

I have since changed the whole diff/haldex with a donor from an S3.

I then set about dismantling the rear diff and cleaning it up to see why it was locking and being generally noisy. When I got it to pieces and clean I was surprised to see everything in decent condition and looking quite healthy, the only thing I can see/feel being a bit rough are the two bearings on the diff shaft.

So, does anybody know where I can get the two bearings from and looking at the pictures can you see anything I missed that might be the issue??

 Thanks for looking.

Can't help I'm afraid as I know nothing about things like that.

Going off your pics i do think you differential bits would make an excellent garden feature for a petrol head like your self.

Alan Titchmsarsh would be proud! Lol !

you noticed, gravel and block paving, I am no gardener!  As for the Diff, I will have to get the bearings off and go to a specialist to get some I think.

I'm pretty certain you cant buy any internal components for a haldex unit from vw, it's supplied as a complete assembly. However you may be able to source the bearings from a bearing factor like brt, if you measure them up they should be able to match them up to something.

Thanks Tom, that is where I am going I think, a bearing factor.  As for the Haldex, I have emailed and spoken to Haldex and they just said to let them know what I needed and they would ship from Sweden.

if you have the numbers of each bearing it should be straight forward and much cheaper than either a stealer or Haldex     bearings seem to be a strange commodity where  specialists seem to offer huge discounts over other sources   it's good to know that they will ship from Sweden if necessary   they are now part of Lockheed I think and not Haldex "corp"   but  keep the name--  for now  goo dluck and keep us posted   great pics    cheers Nic

p.s.  were there any thrust washers on the outer end of the pinions ?

in the third and fourth picture you can see the bearing on the drive shaft coupling, the only other two bearings are on the main shaft with the helical gear, so four bearings in total. Two tapered and two normal.

how's it going :wonder:

I haven't revisited this diff set up yet, I have been getting the car through the MOT, which is all done now.

On the replacement diff I have an error code in the controller so will be trying the one off the stripped diff to see if the fault clears.

 Thanks for asking
