Broken temperature sensor - what is the effect?

Featured Replies

Hi

I have a 2001 Fabia and the temperature sensor needs replacing. I have been driving with it for a while, having not got around to changing it. This morning I tried to take the car out for a short drive but, although the engine sounded fine, the car was juddering a bit and when I put my foot on the accelerator I wasn't get much response. I promptly stuck the car back on the drive.

There is a leak somewhere in the system - the garage have had the car a couple of times but can't find where the leak is. I have therefore been keeping an eye on the coolant level and it was fine this morning so, while that is obviously a problem that needs fixing, it's not what was wrong this morning (not directly anyway).

Does the sensor tell the engine how much petrol is needed? Does the fact that the car has been sat in the rain for the last few days and that it hadn't warmed up make any difference?

I know nothing about this so these maybe really stupid questions to ask, but any advice much appreciated.

Thanks

Which engine is in your car? Let's start there please.

Sorry, it's a 1.4 engine, petrol, manual.

Which 1.4, 8v or 16v?

The 8v (a Fabia Comfort)

Most Comforts are 16v like mine, however, yes you should go ahead and get the temperature sensor replaced since it certainly does affect fuelling. If this doesn't fix your problem you need to get the HT side of the ignition looked at, spark plugs, leads (if you have them) and coil pack(s).

Thanks for the advice. I'll do that.

I usually love Bank Holidays, but not this one!
