Future Yeti thoughts

Featured Replies

Taking the recent FL into consideration, what do you think the redesigned Yeti will be like in a few years' time? Alternatively, what would YOU like to see it have: design ideas, tech, engines, etc?

1. A decently powerful (180PS say, if not more) petrol engine with DSG and competitive CO2. (As already exists in the VW range.)

2. While I don't want it to grow too much, another 100-150mm of length would give just that much extra space in the boot area, without making the Yeti signifcantly more unwieldy.

3. A redesigned dash that puts the satnav screen in the optimum place, ie high in the central area where it's much easier to see. (I suspect this will happen because it's the obvious place (goodness knows why it wasn't done to start with) and several other models are leading the way with this change. And in parallel with this: a better way of controlling satnav/settings - touch screens really aren't the optimum solution on cars, which are inherently jostling around as you drive. A control knob/joystick (whatever it's called) just in front of the central armrest, as in eg the new Mazda 3 but many others too, is ergonomically good because it allows extra control stability. Personally I'd like a HUD too.

4. Better refinement - even just better soundproofing.

Some good suggestions there, prodata. Extra length would be good, then maybe it would be made slightly more streamlined, longer bonnet? That would surely help economy and CO2 - this should be better, as you say.

I like the idea of a central control knob, kind of like the BMW iDrive thing. Better tech inside would help. I read a lot of comments which seem to criticise the satnav systems. Maybe a deal with TomTom would be an idea?

How about splitting the model between more hardcore 4x4, including those things that green-laners like, and more 'urban' style Yetis? They've already touched on this but I think could go more 'intense' or focused with it.

I would like to see Skoda utilise the new car iOS system, that apple have created.

Decent high-res screen too, and more customisable user settings.

Just a comment on the satnav. I don't know why anyone might level serious criticism at Columbus - IMO it's a perfectly good example of a typical, relatively premium in-car satnav. A couple of things I would say:

1. The touchscreen on my 2010 vintage one is irritatingly unresponsive sometimes - makes me wonder if it isn't a resistive type rather than capacitative. (Of course this is a detail that might be improved on the FL, or indeed might have changed anyway since 2010 - it's enough of a detail that it wouldn't be very prominent in any MY changes list, even though it would make a really material difference to ease of use.) And this also isn't particularly a criticism of Columbus as a satnav system - more one of whoever makes the screen hardware.

2. Like all satnavs, it has its quirks. But it works pretty well most of the time.

3. I don't know why Skoda/VW don't recognise the importance of regular, inexpensive database updates. Though I've updated my Columbus to 7-digit postcodes, for instance, some areas still do not have the codes in 7 digits, though quite a few do.

260-300bhp.

I agree that satnav should be repositioned where the trinkets box is on the top of the dashboard. I would also like a split tailgate, with a lower half strong enough to sit on to change shoes etc. (as on Peugeot 3008).

I really hope not, same for the Google version.

Especially ditto the Google version, although come to think of it, aren't Apple a bunch of tax evading a######s as well? 'Put me off ever considering buying a Nissan when I saw that they're using Google s/w. It's the same with Starbucks and Amazon-stopped using them over a year ago and if enough people did the same, then it'd hit them enough in the pocket to make them change their ways. Rant over. Apologies

Re the sat nav, why not the audi style flip up/fold down type thing?

With really good software and gui (never used one, so may be like that off the shelf)

Roller ball type/joystick pointer control built in (in a "falls readily to hand" location).

4G connectivity, ability to and recieve emails.  I would really like to have access to something like googlemaps when out and about.  In my case, searching for hotels & restaurants.  For all us folk who don't have or want a smartphone.

Much better sound proofing and noise suppression.

Gutsy yet frugal Diesel.  With selectable response - offroad mode, a hurry up mode, an eco mode.

Is it beyond the wit of man to incorporate these in to a "we learn your mood"?

Rugged, reliable, responsive dsg.  Linked to above.

Cars don't need to handle text messages or emails. I don't want the navigation unit stolen and someone have access to everything.

The only thing it needs a connection for is traffic and navigation data, and maybe diagnostics/remote assistance.

That's it.

+1. Also agree with the suggestion re Audi-style flip satnav screen.

A lot of these things have been discussed here (from the opposite side of course):

So without going through all that again, the main things I want is:

  1. A MUCH bigger boot (even if the car gets longer)
  2. Adaptive Cruise control

Yeti Vrs would be interesting :-)

A better solution for the spare wheel would be nice. The present one seems to sap too much space from the already smallish luggage room.

Well yes, but what else could you do, other than use a genuine skinny spacesaver wheel/tyre? Maybe there's a way of mounting it vertically to one side or the other, but wouldn't that unbalance the whole car? On the back - no, no, no! (And besides it's almost certainly not practicable.)

I'd be quite surprised if it doesn't end up looking a lot more like a Mk2 Tiguan next time round.

Just read the 'Pet Hates' thread, thanks. Most common improvements seem to be:

- better 'cruise control' controls (as you mention, adaptive would be good - it's the way forward, pardon the pun!);

- improved guttering to stop getting dripped on when opening the door

- do something with the parcel shelf, eg. retractable

- better switching for heated mirrors.

Would a longer Yeti change its driving dynamics, do you think, take some of the dynamism away? Or would it be an improvement to allow better streamlining and bigger boot?

If you look at the rest of the range its heading the same way was the Sharan/Alambra.

One design, tweaked for the brand with only Audi escaping.

You may not need email, but I do.  Because I don't have/want a smart phone (to which the same would arguments apply), but need to book hotels, restaurants and appointments with vinyards when in France.  I also like being able to check out the loads of possibilities on Via Michelin, I just wish it wasn't quite so broken.  Obviously I would not be txting (ever) or composing emails as I drive.

If idiots spec up and design something to look like a tarts boudoir, then no doubt it will become attractive to the thieving scum that roam the world.  But it doesn't have to be like that, I suggested a possible fold away solution, as invisible as mans ingenuity can make it.

At least where I chose to live, car theft is rare.  Now every radio/satnav is unique to that model, the market value is reduced.

I have an octavia because the stowage is too small in a YETI.  A better arrangement for the spare would help. An extension would be even better.  I might consider buying one if they don't change the styling too much.

While we are about it, why not stow the 5 pot motor in there, if the guru's think the chassis is up to it.

an optional lower ride height for non 4x4 certain variants/ versions, which would save on fuel on long motorway journeys, maybe using 'air ride' suspension which could be altered or adjusted for off road conditions.

it's based on the A5 platform, which is used by longer wheelbased vehicles within the VAG group so I doubt an extra few CM would change the handling too much, but may affect OR capabilities (easier to ground on hill crests)

I shied away from any mention of air ride, air bags, slamming, any of that malarky.   Although I thought it could just be made to work.  How hard could it be?

not hard at all; there are already airbags, tanks and controllers that would go straight on ;)

How about a Hybrid driveline, in a Tonka toy body, with pure electric range of say 10 miles. Then HUD display. All with 5 year warranty!
