Witch budget coilovers?

Featured Replies

Hi

Im on a budget so im looking at a cheap set of coilovers. My choices are JOM, FK, Tuning Art or Pro Sport. Ive heard good things about the Pro Sport ones but does anyone know anything about the others?

Cheers guys

epic sports look no further :hi:

Yeah, Pro Sport. I have heard good things about them, but id like to know if anyone has any experience with the others too

To and prosport are good but quite pricy for them I think...

I've had all 3 and value for money I say JOM all the way there under £200 and last around 3 year and to didn't last much longer tbh and are more money

Ide say JOM for the price you pay.

Prosports here, I think they're great :)

Last around 3 years? Crikey. Cheap coilies sound like a real false economy to me.

I have FK highsports with no problems, will go silly low but I have them only around 30mm lowered. Highsports are probably not the cheapest ones though!?

Considering there under £180 NEW isn't too bad and was only 1 weaping and only failed due to massive pot holes on my 200 mile journey to work every week

Changing shocks and getting tracking realigned every three years is not my idea of fun though. I'm more than happy to do maintenance properly, but I like to do jobs to last the distance, and to me, that is very poor economy.

It's not poor considering there's a guy with a mk3 vr6 who's had some for the last 6 year and still going strong ... And if you havnt got £300+++ to buy others there a good option...

I didn't wana constantly get those things done either but working in Scotland meant I had to

I've had standard Monroe shocks go quicker than that on my Mazda 323f so, depending on the roads, I don't think it is too bad

Hahaha, Monroe are crap. It's amazing what having a well-known name can do for a company's sales.

Hahaha, Monroe are crap.

I agree with you there but I was just saying that they are a pretty typical replacement part for your average joes car. I never said they were good.

ok, 3 for pro sports, 1 for FK, 1 for JOM and none for tuning art. Decision made! lol

What ride height have you guys been running and what size rims and rubber? I cant go too low because of the massive amount of dam speed bumps in my town. Ive also had issues with my last 2 cars of ripping the rear bumper off on over-sized curbs, so, this time im not going too low. I want coilies so I can change the height if Im on a track day or in a town where they actually spend money on repairing potholes, lol

@demonufo - In my town the roads are so bad NO shocks last 30k! Just a fact as our council dont spend money on repairing potholes, etc. Ive run Koni, Bilstien, Spax, etc. NONE of them last more than 3 years here! Pro Sports are £165 and thats fine for me as long as the ride is good! You could spend £600 on Billies and they would still be knackered in 3 years in my town.

The point of this thread wasnt to diss budget suspension but to share which one is best! Honestly, I have kids and WAY better things to spend £600 on than suspension!

Realistically you'll be spending closer to £250 on Prosports by the time you factor in ARB links and new top mounts, bearings and rear bump stops. Still good value though, 2 years warranty too.

@ phill - I was wondering about the ARB? Ive heard you can go 40mm without replacing it (Bar not links)? Obviously Powerflex bushes all round but I really dont think I can do more than a 40mm drop  (Due to our roads) os do I really need to go the ARB route?

What do you guys with think? Whats your experience?

What model do you drive? I've (not anybody else as far as I'm aware) not had to change the ARB through necessity, maybe upgrade though?

This is mine on the Prosports and 10mm spacers on the front (you will need spacers too if you're going much lower than stock)..

Not the case for the OP as he does not own a VRS. (from his sig)

Folks with VRS who purchased Pro-Sports have had to also purchase shorter drop links from strut to ARB due to the Pro-Sport having the drop link mount much lower than std position on std shocks or other coil overs. Non VRS Octy's don't have the drop link attach to the strut but from ARB to wishbone..

This is true as you have the ARB that is looped over the drive shaft. If you lower over 40mm you will get knocking from drive shaft to ARB.

Phil's car is a VRS which has a different ARB / drop link set up where the ARB is under the drive shaft so don't get clearance issues.

40mm though is way lower than you probably need to go.

Thanks guys. If im getting this right. Ill need the ARB for 40mm+ drop, but probably best not to go that low?

I know from experience that some models of car run lower standard suspension than others so a 40mm drop on my L&K TDi would be like a 10mm drop on a VRS?

The best example is my old Punto Sporting (runs 15mm lower than a standard Punto.) I bought a standard kit (For the sporting but not coilies) that was 30mm lower but it only dropped mine 20mm as the 10mm was already dropped.

So, if Im right dropping a VRS 30mm would be like dropping mine 60mm? Assuming the VRS is 30mm lower than my standard ones?

vRS is 26mm lower, iirc.

ok, so would a 30mm drop on mine be like a 56mm drop on a VRS?

Other way around.

30mm drop on a vrs would be 56mm drop on yours ;)

Correct buddy. If you want to go lower than 40mm you have 2 options:

1. Get the shortened drop links for your current ARB to wishbone

something like this

http://www.ebay.co.uk/bhp/adjustable-drop-links

need left and right side

2. Replace your ARB set up for a VRS type ARB set up which will cost you more as you will need ARB plus the VRS type drop links for Strut to ARB

something like this

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1x-Skoda-Octavia-1U5-1-8-Delphi-Front-Left-Stabiliser-Drop-Link-Anti-Roll-/350723997121?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Car+Make%3ASkoda%7CModel%3AOctavia%7CCars+Type%3ARS+1.8+T&hash=item51a8c77dc1

However if you get Pro Sport coilovers you will need Mercedes vito ones

like these

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2x-Mercedes-Vito-W638-Bus-ACP-Front-Drop-Links-Stabiliser-Anti-Roll-Suspension-/331000001718?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Car+Make%3AMercedes-Benz%7CModel%3AVito&hash=item4d112334b6

And this

+1 which is what he first quoted lol..
