Returning tyres to online retailer.

Featured Replies

Got 4 Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance 205/55 R16 and not too keen on the tread or the very soft sidewall so decided not to put them on the alloys. Does anyone know of a cheap courier to send them back with?

Paisley Freight do a deal for 4 alloys and tyres for £30.

Reading through the Terms and conditions for returns there appears to be 15% restocking fee which as far as I know is against the 7 day (from receiving goods of goods) cooling off period in Distance Selling Regs. Will contact them today.

Will go again with the Bridgestone All weather A001 despite reduction in fuel efficiency and road noise as they are reasonably priced and have lasted well as about half worn at 15,000 miles. Unfortunately I didn't pick up on a wheel bearing problem causing wear and also waited too long to get front ball joints sorted and shredded some front outer edges.

I can't see anything in there saying I have to pay for return cost.

Did you ever use them? If so, it may change things.

They have to return all your money, including your original shipping. See The Consumer Protection (Distance Selling) Regulations 2000, Regulation 14, Paragraph 1. There is no exemption for original shipping. You can also make them pay to recover them if in their terms it does not say you pay for returns.

If you paid by credit card (which you should always do online) you can take it up with them to pursue on your behalf.

While the shipping fee is somewhat debateable from a moral point of view (and my sympathies are with the retailer on that one), they cannot require the restocking fee in this situation as it is within the 7 day limit, which was the main point I was trying to make.

Tyres are of course unused.

I would normally expect to pay shipping to return the goods and have asked if anyone knows of a cheaper way of returning them.

I was surprised to see misleading terms and conditions regarding restocking fees which on email enquiry was stated to be not the case. Full refund less the outward carriage. Looks like that is against DSR but small price to pay  as the £12 would be less than a trip to the local town and back.

Regarding the moral issue of shipping fees, yes there is a case for that but also the on line retailers business model must allow for a certain percentage of these returns and as such I shouldn't feel to bad looking for the best deal (combination of cost and speed of delivery and ease of ordering) and returning if not what I want.

I buy on line because I got fed up with local tyre installers bending the sills with stupid jacking.

I had these tyres on my last Octavia 1.8 TSi and did around 60,000 on 3 sets and they performed very well and I will be putting the on my Superb as soon as it needs them.

They give good grip in all weathers and I would say give them a try.

In the past 10 years I have had Goodyears on all my company cars and done around 250,000 miles on them with no problems at all.

I was under the impression that EfficientGrip Performance are new tyres in the last year?

they are the new tyre however i think you would be pleasantly surprised by the all round performance they offer, i certainly was

FFS guys, I take it that neither of you run your own business. There's a reason why online tyre suppliers are cheaper to buy from.

So OP, after you have 'tyre kicked' (sorry couldnt resist ;) ) you've decided you don't like them. There's nothing wrong with the product, but now you expect the online tyre supplier to pick up shipping out to you and return!

Amazing. Personally I'd put it down to me making a mistake and paying for shipping both ways, but I'm obviously in the minority

It's in the distance selling regs. You can send something back without reason as you haven't had the luxury to see at the point of sale.

As above they can't charge a restocking fee as that's against the DSRs.

If you paid by credit card contact them unless you get a refund in full including outbound postage to you - returns are your responsibility.

If a firm gets shirty, send them a link to the DSRs and statutory consumer regs and threaten trading standards and your local BBC radio consumer show ;)

I'm fully aware of distance selling regs, and I stated nothing about restocking fee.

Just stated that personally if I returned an item for no reason, then I'd be prepared to pay shipping both ways. I don't see why a company would be expected to pay shipping both ways out of their cost if their was no fault. Expecting them to swallow these costs mans they have to increase their prices so we all lose out.

That's all.

:)

Just echoing the previous comments - I've just fitted a full set of these to my Mk 1 4x4 Octavia estate (205/55/16 91W)  and they are a huge improvement over the last set - quieter, good grip in the wet and a noticeable improvement in MPG too.

I was under the impression that EfficientGrip Performance are new tyres in the last year?

I may just have had Efficient Grip then But they were a great tyre.

Couldn't agree more

DSRs or no DSRs, the fact you just don't like something when you get it shouldn't leave the seller to pick up the tab
