DVD Audio extraction (DTS/DD to Stereo)

Featured Replies

Yo!

I've recently got the latest two Mike Oldfield re-issues. Both contain DVDs with 5.1 mixes. What I'd like to be able to do is listen to these in the car. I know that the 5.1 will be out of the question, but the discs also have no stereo tracks (as far as I can tell) on them. :(

Does anyone know of an audio extraction / downmix program that will output to MP3 (320k?) Or is this going to be a case of going through the analogue hole?

Thanks.

Just in case there's anyone "mis-reading" what's going on here, I'm not looking to pirate / redistribute any of this material in any way......just want to listen to it in the car.

The tracks should be contained within the .VOB files. Not sure how you get them out though. :(

Just had a thought; Freemake Video Converter allows you to convert the DVD to MP3 IIRC. You'd need to select the tracks individually I think, but have never done it myself.

What O/S are you running? If you're on windows I'm afraid I can't help you, but if you're on a Mac or Linux then try ffmpeg (you can probably get it for Windows as well, but I've never tried it, so can't be sure).

Rip the DVD the way you would normally do when making a backup or storing it on network storage for media centre playback. (Easiest way would be to use Handbrake and rip to an mkv file, which you can then 'extract' stuff from using ffmpeg).

Once you have the VOBs (or format of your choice), you can use ffmpeg to inspect the file to find out what stream id the audio track you're interested in lives at

macmini:VIDEO_TS pthexton$ ffmpeg -i VTS_04_3.VOB

<snip a bit of the output>

Input #0, mpeg, from 'VTS_04_3.VOB':
  Duration: 00:24:49.53, start: 983.316000, bitrate: 5766 kb/s
    Stream #0:0[0x1e0]: Video: mpeg2video (Main), yuv420p, 720x576 [sAR 64:45 DAR 16:9], 9800 kb/s, 25.40 fps, 25 tbr, 90k tbn, 50 tbc
    Stream #0:1[0x80]: Audio: ac3, 48000 Hz, 5.1(side), s16, 448 kb/s
    Stream #0:2[0x22]: Subtitle: dvd_subtitle

So from this I can see that the ac3 audio lives at stream 0:1

You can rip the audio by running ffmpeg as:

ffmpeg -i VTS_06_1.VOB -map 0:1 -c:a libmp3lame output.mp3

This will do a basic downmixing, so may not be perfect or you may have some clipping as a result of LFE stuff - in which case I'd suggest posting in the ffmpeg forums asking for help.

Would I be correct in thinking that if you`d got the rns510 instead of the rns315 then you could just play the disc as a DVD audio disc in glorious 5:1 sound?

Thanks Lee and Thecko, I'll look into those.

John: ah now there could be two things with that:

1) the car isn't 5.1 (so it would have to down-mix any way)

2) I like the new mixes, but not *that* much that I'd buy a replacement h/u (and the required BT and DAB components to got with it)

.....otherwise, yes, I suspect that would work, and work quite well :) :)

VLC to the rescue :D Forgot about that and have it on both my 'puters. Not looked into everything it can do but it certainly plays any file type I've encountered.

Just did a trial 'dummy' run and it seems pretty straight-forward, even for me

i just googled "extract audio from DVD" and that came up :)

I think i might do it to turn some stand up DVDs in to audiobooks

I'd completely forgotten you can use VLC for stuff like that, I normally use it just to play back video files :)

me too :D I need it for those TV shows I legitimately download :bandit:

I mostly use it now to play back recordings I've made using a TV tuner so I can note where the adverts start/end so I can 'cut' them all out ... other than that, I use XBMC as a media centre solution (mac mini connected to TV over HDMI and tos-link to the AV reciever for 5.1 tracks, it would be perfect if I could get bluray playback on the mac but Apple simply won't do it :( )

I have NO idea what you just said there :D

I tend to download, convert to DivX then use a USB stick in a DivX DVD upscaling player.

That's because Apple haven't totally invented Blu-Ray yet ;) ;)

Aye. I did try to use the ps3 at first but that turned out to do *nothing* well apart from bluray playback, so my compromise is to only ever turn the ps3 on for bluray and use the Mac for everything else :-)

Wireless keyboard with integrated trackpad, mac connected to TV and surround sound system. Step 1) Download. Step 2) Play.

:-)

I just need a robot to make cups of tea and bring them to me and I'd barely ever need to get off the couch!

I have to admit I was maybe too surgical in my search......"Extract 5.1 DTS to MP3"

I'll try to remember to be less precise next time ;)

lol nope, that's how I can afford all my geek toys in the first place ;)

SCORE!

Thank you very much! After a lil' bit of faffing around, I am now the proud owner of the Crises and Five Miles Out 2013 mixes........in stereo and ready to play in the car :) :) :) :)

Will have to keep hold of this VLC thingy and look into it some more.......

That reminds me, I need to buy those 2013 mixes myself... payday treat at the end of the month!

The CDs are the original mixes, with a couple of extras thrown in. The real jems are the 5.1 2013 mixes. So many extra little bits have been brought forward in the mix, especially bass. Certainly something you won't regret buying. Am hoping that The Lake and The Wind Chimes will 5.1 mixes too. Find out next year...............

Oh and a new album is in the final mixing stage too. :)

Interesting, I was a little underwhelmed by light & shade and music of the spheres, but I'll almost certainly buy it before listening anyway :-)

If it's a DVD then there must be a stereo track, so no need for downmixing.

Nope. I have several DVDs that don't have a stereo track.
