Trading car in and old tax disc

Featured Replies

I could be wrong but I think that dealers can no longer cash in tax discs so they usually tell you to take them out.

I thought that was the case as well. On the V14 it says you need to be the registered keeper or have just sold the vehicle.

Reading the form, only the owner at the time of tax purchase can get a refund?

It says you must be the current or previous registered keeper and have sold or transferred the vehicle. I'd interpret this as you needn't have been the owner at the time of tax purchase.

However it does say in section C of the form "If you are a motor dealer or fleet owner:- If the vehicle is not, or was not registered in your name then you are not entitled to a refund and you do not have to make a SORN." So it looks like a motor dealer can't get a refund on the tax disc anyway.

When i traded my old Nissan Primera in for the Octavia i was asked how much tax was left on it, I had to pay for tax to be put on the Octy so i took the tax disc off the Primera And got a refund of £70 back...

Well it was a big NO, it was part of the deal. Followed by being policed as I swapped the kids seats over.

At least you have the definitive answer, no doubts on that front any more ;)

Dealers/traders have not been able to refund the VED for a few years now, think it was around 2009 they stopped it, seems to ring a bell.

But the disc can still have a value for the dealer, even if he is trading it on or reselling it direct off his forecourt.

During any trading in/purchasing negotiations it is always worth getting it clear from the start if the VED (depending on the refund value/time remaining), if it is staying or going, never assume it is yours to refund!

Happy days

Yup.

TBH didnt want to deal with the chain for various reasons, but they were the only ones within 100 miles with what we wanted at the price we were looking at.

But I'm pretty mad for reasons other than VED on the new one and the Skoda.....
