Trading car in and old tax disc

Featured Replies

Trading in the car, and had to pay for tax on the new car.

So, what happens to the tax disc in the current car? Is that part of the deal or mine to get something back from the dvla?

I was asked how much tax was remaining before they gave their price.

Last 2 cars (10years) were originally leased and all previous cars sold on to family/friends so no experience.

I was asked how much tax was remaining before they gave their price.

Presumably this very point makes it part of the trade-in deal.

You paid the duty, get it back. Up to the next owner to pay for the duty I thought.

It's not much use to the dealer unless they are going to use the car, as only the registered keeper can cash it in.

It's yours unless specifically part of the deal imho.

Traded my car today. It had £40 tax remaining. I had every intention of cashing it in, but mentioned it to the dealer out of courtesy. They simply said " cash it in, we do not want it".

It's in the post already!

Terms just say in the same condition as appraised. Checklist doesn't list road tax, just mot, v5,2 keys....

Well the feckers wouldn't throw in tax on the new one so I expect agro at taking the disc out.

You don't get if you don't try! Besides how many used cars do you see on forecourts with car tax still on them. Good luck.

So if successful at "and I'm having that" how do I go about getting it back? As they'll have the v5c

There is a form you can download from the dvla IIRC. I did it when I chopped in my old car.

If they specifically asked how much VED remained at the negotiation stage, then it was used in their calculation of the part exchange value they have offered.

The remaing value of VED cannot be refunded to the dealer but if he is selling it on either direct or back into the trade the VED is his, to use as part of his resale.

If you remove this you could alienate the dealer and or be in breach as you say "in condition as appraised" which would include IMHO the disc especially as reference had previously been made by the dealer.

Where the new car tax was required you had the opportunity to negotiate this as part of the deal, so I do not see this as a big shock, unless you were led to believe it had a current VED disc?? And subsequently it is not there.

I would leave it where it is and sharpen your negotiation skills for your next vehicle, I always get it as part of the deal or explain that I will be removing the disc for my own refund.

Last vehicle I sold to a trader paid me in full,to me to leave my disc on as it was 2 weeks into its renewal period and on my 4 x4 it was £250.00! :) extra on the deal. He sold it with the disc as a sweetener to the next owner and even included a picture of the disc in his online advertisement.

My wife's citigo @ 4 months old had the VE disc included in with my deal (not much of a negotiating point on a £20 renewal fee).

You should have the v5c/3 or something like that ( cannot quite remember). Send it off with the form to which you attach your tax disc.

The v5c/3 for is the one that YOU send to DVLA to say you sold he car to a dealer.

I asked several times and was told no I have to buy the tax disc for the new(used) car which doesn't have one for some reason. I assume previous owner cashed it in.

As for alienating the dealer, our relationship is purely the deal. Beyond that nothing.

You need to fill in a V14.  You attach the tax disk to it and then let Royal Mail lose it in the post.

If you have no warranty with them and you are happy to attempt to get a refund and possibly/potentially loose any goodwill in the future should you need some help, then go for it but IMHO it was part the deal.

When the dealer asked how much VED remained you should of said "none" as I will be applying for a full refund of my VED disc....simples as.

He would have offered a reduced part ex value or asked please leave it in and we will offer the value in our deal.

As my recent dealer did, he did try it on but I told him up front the disc is not part of the deal unless he paid for it, which he duly did.

Many dealers sell cars on with a valid disc and use this as part of their resale value.

For you to tell him xxx months, it is blatant to me that that value of the remaining duty was used as part of his calculation and his part ex offer.

Just my 2 pennies worth; go to the dealer and ask for the disc, see his reaction.

Then you will know for Definite!

With your new second hand purchase if you were not happy with paying for VED could have walked, from the deal if it was that much of an issue,(I would and have in the past) the salesman would soon turned round and offered at least 6 months.

Not picking a fight with you but for you to ask the original question, you know or have reasonable grounds to beleive he put the remaining tax, in the deal offer ;)

It has manufacturer warranty. ;)

Need to ask the question really.

I traded in my previous car, they told me to claim the tax back, when I traded in another car they used it as part of the deal... I assume that was as they thought it'd sell quick... Haha still there on their forecourt now (minus the tax that run out)!

When I traded my old car in I fully expected to leave the tax disc in it but the sales guy told me to take it out because the car was going to auction. The fact that I must have been one of his easiest customers as well might have helped - was in the door just after 9 had a quick chat, went for an unescorted test drive (I was 20 at the time and he just gave me the keys to the Octy vrs demo and said have fun but don't crash it) and left with approved finance by half 11 and a car ordered in my name.

In this situation, I would always take the disc out and claim the duty back. But as it was mentioned and presumably taken into consideration during negotiation, I think you have to be careful.

I would have told them there is no tax included in the trade-in unless they paid for it.

If this is a Skoda dealer and your buying an aprroved used car then you should just get the tax disc back.

We traded our car in with 11 months Tax on it.

They weren't bothered and said we should take the disc.

We then also had to buy the tax on the new (used) car.

Then sent our disc off to DVLA (you stick it to the form) and got the money back for the remaining 11 months.

Not Skoda, but VAG.

When we traded in a clio i asked about the tax & they said no,keep it & cash it in,same when i bought my octy, garage said keep it,had to pay for the tax on both new cars though. The fact that they asked sounds to me like your going to have to leave it in your car for them, only sure way is to ask.

I could be wrong but I think that dealers can no longer cash in tax discs so they usually tell you to take them out.
