Glowing led in the removable boot torch - Fixed

Featured Replies

Symptom :One of the three LEDs appears to glow when all doors are closed and the car is locked.

Cause : when you tried one of those stupid replacement LED w5w bulbs in the boot door you created a momentary short and damaged the integral diode of the lamp holder.

Cure: Remove the lamp holder(s) and disconnect from the car by pinching both sides of the plug and pulling.

Remove the bulb.

Either,

with a multimeter on diode test confirm the diode reads in both directions and replace,

or

with a multimeter on resistance check that you only get a reading with the probes connected one way (swap probes over so if red was on the left it is now on the right and black probe vice versa)if you get a reading both ways then replace the diode.

If you only get a reading in one direction, check the second lamp holder.

The diode is a 1N4007 (that's (oneN4007)) a very common diode that you should find at maplin or from your local tv repairer if there are any left.

The diode is a push fit, not soldered so just trim the legs to match the old and push into place making sure you insert with the solid band on the diode facing the direction the old one was.

The 1st picture shows the torch with one glowing led though it looks very bright in the picture (Nokia lumia is amazing at low light)

The second picture shows the boot door lamp holder and diode orientation.

The picture on the extreme left is of the kind of idiot who tries removing bulbs with a metal object without unplugging.

Hi! I have this problem. Slightly different but the result is the same.

I have changed the bootlid lights to superskoda's led's. Now one led in the flashlight starts to glow while after I lock the car.

So is it possible that some other indoor light is causing this problem?

Footwel lights?

Nice work!

I wonder if this will fix the 'torch flicking on when the car is put into reverse' problem....

No, different cause all together ( different cause) (airplane joke, sorry I am old)

I don't think I made it clear in the first post that the diode (s) are located in the boot door lamps and the footwell lights. Woukld be possible to short any one of them.

Thanks!

Have to check the foot well lights diodes.

Altough I don't miss the torch...the superskoda led trunk lights give much more light than the original bulbs. I don't keep the torch in it's holder.
