1.6 vs 1.3 gearbox ratios?

Featured Replies

Is there any difference in gear ratios between the 1.3 and 1.6?

yes but mainly the final drive ratio, (136)1.3 has 4.12 and 1.6 has 3.83(along with 135 for some strange reason), diesel has 3.33 and a 3.58 later on I believe and the 1.0 fabia sold in east europe has a 4.81 final drive!!!

I have been looking to make the best ratio's I can by mixing and matching and it is 1.3 . 1,2+5 fab 8v 3,4 which closes the gap between 2+3 up a bit.

Thanks for that. I do a lot of distance driving. Any harm in sticking a diesel box on my 1.6?

no harm at all , you will have to swap a couple of studs for nuts and bolts but that is all, or you could swap the 5th gear over (can't remember the ratios now tho) if it gives a higher ratio and keep 1>4 the same

So I read this correctly the Felicia "L" has a longer final drive? Explains perhaps why our boy has been claiming spectacular MPG compared to my estate.

That sounds to be the way forward then.

Forget taking gearboxes apart... hate the smell!

Does the Gearbox from the 1.3 fit onto the 1.6 engine? my gearbox has died.

Yes it will fit...

It's possible you will not like the new dynamic of the car. Study about engine power characteristic and transmission gear ratios.

Depends if its all in and around town driving it might be preferred having a lower final drive.

So, i finally sourced a refurbished gearbox for a 1.6, did the clutch at the same time of course.. This is my first own car so my first real attempt at mechanics. It was fun, sort of..

Main issues i encountered: Gear linkage roll pin... I didn't have a punch that was a perfect fit, so two hours drilling later it was out, and replaced with a bolt and nylock nut. Lower arm hub swivel joints, they did not want to just 'drop out' as haines suggest, some leverage and a screwdriver to unpinch it further did the trick. dethreading of anti roll bar drop link nuts. Nut splitter and new links did that one..

Now, please, feel free to laugh.. on reconnecting the gear linkage, after two days under the car i hastily used a set of grips on the selecter rod extruding from the gearbox.. Some blemish damage to the rod swiftyl ate at the oil seal causing me a leak. DOH! hoping some emery cloth a a new seal wlll cure, anybody have any experience on swapping the selector shaft oil seal?

I won't laugh, similar mishaps happened to us too. Sadly, a groove is a groove, no matter if it has sharp edges or not. Even though the polished shaft will no more chew from the seal, the oil will leak. New seals on new shafts don't last too long either. The rubber gaiter that should protect dirt from sticking to the shaft is total rubbish.

I have uploaded for you an archive with relevant photos.

As for mating a 1.6 gearbox with a 1.3 engine, I am afraid you will get a 80 mph maximum speed in 5th. There is a member of this forum in this exact situation and now he struggles to find a 14SK gearbox for his 1.3 MPI engine.

So what's the best option on the 1.4 16v ad I have both a 1.3 and 1.6 box to play with....

Read Hillier's Fundamentals of Motor Vehicle Technology, Book 1, Chapter 3, Transmission systems, page 280.

can you fit a fabia 8v gearbox to the 1400 polo engine?? or even a polo gearbox to the engine?? sorry its a bit off the topic here just interested to find out as the ratios are what let my car down when rallying they are awful!!!

I believe (from what I've read from the likes of Tom) yes you can fit the polo gearbox but you'll run in to problems with mounts, drive shafts, gear selector etc.

Hi mate I think the shorter final drive on the 1.3 gearbox will suit the revvy nature of the 16v....just remember the red line in the Felly relates to the original 1.6 not the 16v!
