Rarrrp - Tssst. CAI / Uprated DV? Which/Both?

Featured Replies

I believe it can be done but you get heatsoak and could cause loss in performance. IMO just get a CAI or green cotton panel filter in std airbox.

  • The split R is expensive but imo its worth every penny. My misses likes the noise it makes, she keeps telling me to make it louder.. :)

  • The Pipercross Viper is an enclosed type CAI if I recall?   My  ABD CAI makes a hell of a difference.

Righto then, the plan is to get a CAI at the earliest opportunity, I presume just throwing a K&N cone on the end is appropriate?

But of course...

I had a Neuspeed one for a bit that is an in bay filter, looked like this:

It sounded nice, good dump noise, but you could tell that when it gets warm in the bay that it isn't as good as a CAI. So if you can get a CAI, do!

yep but make sure you get an enclosed CAI buddy to avoid heat soak.

Not like this set up below which is not best set up.

But of course...

This set up will give heat soak (although cold air pipe will help a little but not ideal)

this is defo better as enclosed shield from the engine and a cold feed pipe

This IMO this is the better way

Mine is a ABD one and expensive

similar ones are K&N Typhon

Or on a budget these are just as good.

can change the cone for a K & N one if you are really fussy.

Simota all the way for me, I've posted the same picture in a few threads about enclosed induction kits.

Bah! Waste of money.

What you want to do is drill and smoove the original airbox and bang an uprated panel filter in there

What and get more heat soak through the airbox.

Don't think so.

Tried it got the t shirt...

Smooth airbox and extra 3" cold air is not too bad.

And if you are buying a uprated panel filter that is just as expensive as the CAI but without the better sound the CAI gives.

Lot's of folks running a cheap CAI and liking it.

Personally and in all seriousness I'd say performance wise a sealed intake system is best, but you can lose some of the recirc valve noise.

I don't think a drilled box pulls in anywhere near as much heat as an open cone filter, and it's sounds awesome. To me it's a happy and cheap middle ground.

And I'd say it's perfect for the op ;)

Would this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/COLD-AIR-INDUCTION-INTAKE-1-8T-GOLF-JETTA-GTI-OCTAVIA-/190439519162?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item2c571473ba work with the S2000 filter (or similar, people keep banging on about the S2000 one)? Seems good value to me.

yes but i think you have to get a adapter to get the S2000 filter to fit on the end. There is a thread on here somewhere.

The S2000 filter is dirt cheap i must admit.

Ok, so I just called LVE who I'm insured with now and although they had no problem with the remap they refuse to insure the car with a CAI. So I've done a quick phone around and Chris Knott will cover me for about the same price. I guess I'll swap over!

So I want a nice cone filter and some pipework to move it out away from the hot air around the engine. I can find some examples on eBay. Is it worth spending the money on a more expensive filter to go on the end of the pipework?

check out mighty car mods on youtube when they did dyno runs with a skyline with standard air box and then with cai and found the standard box gives better performance even with the headlight removed for air flow.

So this thread is all about the noise. The feeling of driving a car with a lot of induction noise and dump-valve action. Now I know that's not to everyone's tastes but to me, it's epic :D

Here we go again

The never ending topic of Airbox over CAI.

If the original  OP question was about sound and not performance then the OP might just be interested in the sound. .

A CAI gives better sound over STD airbox

A CAI does not necessarily give better or worse performance  and testing one car on a dyno does not give 100% facts.

My car is mapped with a CAI and works better in my set up and proven with and without CAI. But so many variable can effect that.

In summary  If the OP wants performance then don't expect a CAI to delver is the best  advise.

If the OP wants better sound then get a CAI

If OP is on a budget then , modify STD airbox and add 3" feed

I messed about with this  on this thread few years back.

Here's what I use

The sticker was put on by a friend who couldn't find a bigger ITG sticker!!

Either though it is enclosed I did notice a increase in noise from the standard DV. Performance wise seems abit quicker but would like to see what it actually does on a rolling road

Right so I just changed my insurance over. Bit of a win there: LV were going to charge me £40 for the cancellation but as a I am cancelling because they wont insure the modifications I want they said I wasn't at fault and cancelled the policy, I pay only the difference for the number of days of been insured (10).

So Chris Knott have insured me - £400 for the vRS with the remap and the CAI which I don't have yet...

Someone on the forum has offered me a Jabbasport induction kit, without filters for £50 which is great, but what else do I need, I'm basically getting the jabbasport dividing wall and the metal tube... To quote the seller - 'Everything in this photo but not the filter':

20130916_083355_zps3649f41c.jpg

I think I need:

* An S2000 filter, which I think I can order from a few different motor factors ~£20

* A silicone reducer to fit the S2000 filter to the pipe, which I believe is 70mm -  what size is the neck on the S2000 filter?

* A filter for the SAI intake, don't know what size or if I need silicon piping for that - advice really appreciated

* I'm not sure how the metal tube fits to the MAF, I'm assuming I'd need some silicone tubing of some sort there too?

I think that should be it, can anyone help me with the details?

Cheers

-Rob

Thanks Lloyd!

So I'll order a silicone coupler to fit the filter to the aluminium pipe. I also need to find something to fit as an insert to the SAI intake so I can attack the small filter nicely - I think.

Does anyone know where I could get a dividing wall separately? I like my K&N cone... so only need the wall.
