EGR valves.

Featured Replies

I have just read a post on another forum where someone announced that he has improved his mpg by 10% (from 55 to 60mpg), by disconnecting the EGR valve wiring.

Has anyone heard of this before, and how would it work???

He did admit it means he has his "Check Engine" light on all the time.

it's called an EGR delete. Documented, posted about, archived, lotsa threads on the subject. Search is your friend :)

Thankfully I'm not  But the info is helpful. Oh yeah, the light, it has to be mapped out via VCDS or VAGCom or similar.

Moved to general car chat as Roadside hotel meant for more emotive topics. :)

The EGR valve is basically a valve that opens between inlet and exhaust system that opens on over run and light throttle to improve emmissions,

When open it dumps exhaust gasses back into the inlet to cool charge temperatures,

With it disconnected it will run hotter, only issue is it will produce more soot

I ran my Td4 Freelander with the EGR disconnected for 3 years, with no problems at all.

It might make a small difference the mpg, but 10%? No chance!!

  • 2 years later...

On Fiat's 1.9 many owners fit a blanking plate to stop EGR function. That engine (and in Vauxhall/Saab etc) runs really badly when the EGR gets coked up.

My only other diesel experience was a non-turbo PSA motor which gave a similar MPG increase (from 60 to 65) when the exhaust was full of holes.

I just ignored the noise until MOT time.

Less soot with EGR disabled. From your link; "This is evident by the increase in particulate emissions that corresponds to an increase in EGR.[7][8]"
