Road Noise - How is it?

Featured Replies

Just after reading the threads on the MKII forum and recalling how my own MKII FL had a big issue with road noise unlike the MKIV Golf I had before.

How's the MKIII Octy soundproofing wise? Have they improved it? I've seen people go through the trouble of installing dynamat/noise killer but I'd rather not strip down a brand new car..!

Thanks for reading :)

I can only compare mine with my last car which was a Seat Alhambra. It is good at low speeds. Over 80mph on motorways, road noise is worse.

Didn't reviews say road noise at motorway speeds was quiet audible.

Road noise on a basic demo I had was definitely lower than on my O2FL L&K and I already have extra boot sound insulation fitted in my estate.

Tyre roar/noise is higher but that's because factory tyres are a bit meh. If you had something softer with higher thread, good all season tyres for example, it would be perfect

Wind noise is more noticeable, perhaps because road noise is more muted, but something was constantly whistling quietly and wooshing above 70mph... i mean 60 mph of course. Front close to the cabin, but couldn't quite pin point where. Mirrors, wipers?

The agricultural torsion beam they now fit to all UK models except vRS instead of multilink suspension made quite a racket at the back, it's not going to be the quietest of minicabs around with amount of potholes on our roads.

Interior has some squeeks and rattles on London roads.

Actually factory tires are a lot better quality than u buy afterwords so that is not true.

May be I am not comparing like for like.  The Alhambra (current model), I must say, was a very well sorted car. Very comfortable cruiser.

My 4x4 does have multilink rear suspension. It just seems that the transmission of noise from some road surface is not very well damped at higher speeds.  Yes, my plan is to change over to Goodyear Vector 4 seasons as soon as the original set expires!

Octy III with 18" Golus and sports suspension - very quiet at motorway speeds, no appreciable wind or tyre noise.

You only get tyre noise on poor surfaces but you get that in any car.

Best car I've had for quiet motorway cruising = 2005 Mondeo ST.  Fanstatic car, Octavia has same low noise levels but ride was signifcantly better in the Mondy.

Worst car I've had for quiet motorway cruising = 2007 Audi A4 Avant.  Wind noise was VERY noticeable.

Our roads are so crap now though its easy to blame the car. Be interesting to see how this thread develops though. Anyone know what tyres are fitted at factory ? My yeti has Dunlop sports on them and they are quite quiet something like 78dB or similar.
