Stones in brake calipers

Featured Replies

I've had a Yeti since Nov 2011, and twice now I've had stones in the brake calipers, resulting in a loud metallic screeching noise which sounds very alarming. I don't drive over a lot of unmade roads, and certainly not in the latest instance. My local dealer said it was the first time they'd seen it when it first happened. A friend who's had several Yetis hasn't had this problem, so I just wondered how common it was?

Not had a problem in all the time I've had the Yeti, and I do drive on some rubbish surfaces!

This happens a lot, what you really have, is a stone trapped between the disc and the back plate, drive slowly , window down, diagnose which wheel, get out of the car and push the back plate, behind the disc towards the centre of the axle the wheel is on. You will see a stone drop out, bend the plate back to its original position, job done........

sometimes happens, you got to be lucky though to "find" right size stone and hard enough not to be crashed immediately.

I had this years ago on my Pug 405. I dropped off a chap from work, turned around in the road and as I drove off there was a terrible noise. My house was only two roads away so I carried on driving home to investigate. Taking off the wheel I spotted at small stone stuck in the top of the caliper. The road where it happened was recently resurfaced, well a drizzle of tar and loads of loose stones dumped on it.

Then about 3 years ago it happened in my girlfriends car when we were just pulling into a carpark. I had to jack the car up and remove the wheel. The stone was stuck between the disc and the back plate.

It gives a real nasty noise. Hoping I have had my life's worth of this particular car problem!

Happens quite a lot to rally cars on forest stages, as you might expect. Couple of hard bumps usually enough to dislodge the stone and return normal noise though.  Horrible noise though isn't it? Left uncorrected, it can wreck a disk in just a couple of miles.

Once had a rock the size of a human head get lodged in the wheel arch - on an Irish tarmac stage of all places. Previous car had dislodged the rock from the verge and left it in a place we couldn't avoid catching it. besides banging around in the arch for a few hundred meters, it was preventing any left lock being applied.  Till we managed to get left side of car up a bank that allowed said rock to drop out.  Lucky not to take out any brake lines or anti-roll bar link.

Had this happen, slap the car into quick reverse to flick it out....

Quite common of vw/Audi cars

That's exactly it. Brake from reversing a couple of times to dislodge the stone.

Had it twice on a seat leon, didn't suffer it on a passat, the yeti or a touran (i have a gravel drive).

As above a couple of back, forwards and it should be ficked out ok.

Yes it happened to me while on holiday in Wales. A very alarming intermittent sound, at times it sounded like weight lifting weights being changed on a barbell and it turned quite a few pedestrians heads. I tried to get the stone out, but in the end when I got home I summoned Skoda Assist (RAC) who removed the calliper, I have the stone still a really hard piece of rock. But to add to the tale of woe the RAC mechanic cross threaded the calliper retaining bolts, so the RAC had to pay for a hire car and repairs which included a new wheel bearing and hub as apparently the hub can not be removed without damaging the bearing.

I had this happen while on holiday in France last month. It started just as i pulled off the grave driveway of our first gite.

Lasted a few miles went quiet, came back later. I did give the back plate a bit of a shove and it never happened again.

Oh yes I had a stone chip,  the o/s/front calliper. the Skoda garage found a small granite chip lodged between the disc and pad, I thought the wheel was coming off.
