Diesel smoke

Featured Replies

Ok, mock if you will... As I know most of you all LOVE the black smoke... But it's really getting on my nerves.

I do my best to keep the car clean, it gets a wash and polish every couple days. But it only takes 10 minutes of driving for my boot to be completely covered in black **** again.

What can I do to stop it!

:)

Have the map tweaked to reduce fueling either by the torque limiter or smoke map.

^^^^ this

Knowing how tuned your estate is it's likely that the map has everything turned up to 12

That'll mean loads of power but likely too much fuel meaning too much smoke meaning a black rear end in no time.

Either that or a downward pointing exhaust might help?

As said, map tweak and/or point the exhaust away from the car.

If excess soot is wasted fuel you should be able to tweak the map and cut down the smoke with minimal/no difference to power, if a sensible/reputable company is doing it.

BTW, I hate the black smoke. :)

This may sound silly but what about some kind of filter on the rear silencer?

I think I'm going to have to get rid of my exhaust tip for one that points down :(

Thanks for the help chaps

Unit 18 did the map

If you catch the crap in the filter, where is it going to then go?

That's why later cars have DPFs and regen cycles to burn it off.

You need to point the exhaust down and tweak the map (IMO) to stop everyone behind you needing breathing equipment. ;)

I've got no experience of Unit 18.  Maybe talk to them.

I'd only personally use Jabbapsort or Shark.

Ali knows his stuff and is generally very amenable and'd probably do you a deal on some tweaks

either that or youcould go to W8 Perforance in Tonbridge who coudl proabably sort you a new exhaust tip and do you a Shark remap....

The only way forward I can see.

bosozoku-exhaust-of-the-week-inside-out-

Haha lol

This is also another option....

I've had 2 Unit 18 maps and neither have been smokey. Checked for boost leak?

Ive turned down the egr value on vcds to as much as will allow until I remap. Before I turned it down if I hadn't really booted it for a little while when I did I got quite a lot of smoke. Now with it turned down I get barely any in the same scenario.

What's the best way to check for a leak?

Thanks :)

I have an egr delete if that will make a difference to the smoke

buy a petrol? :D

buy a petrol? :D

I do miss having a petrol car!

Diesels are naturally a dirty sooty engine and not eco-friendly, even with all the sophisticated exhaust gizmos etc.

The petrol engine on the other hand with the exhaust sophistication and gizmos, are a much more cleaner engine and more eco-friendly.

With petrol being cheaper than diesel at the pump, and with almost identical power output, and road tax deductions, it's petrol for me, if there's a chance.

Mine's tuned to the hilt, but the smoke isn't too bad which I like.

Years ago though, mine used to be much more smokey when it had a lot less power.  Can just be down to the mapping ultimately.

I remember the Blackpool run shifty organised. Man yours smoked back then lol

Jason's exhaust helps a bit too.

It comes out the side, into the passing airstream.

Rather than the stock system that throws it out of the back where the smoke gets caught up in the turbulent air at the rear of the car causing it to hang about in a cloud and look worse.

/\/\ Exactly this.  More and more people are running side exit exhausts now.  Also as said the mapping makes a difference - I had a very smokey map and got black flagged from Donington because they thought I was broken :D
