Newbie help needed!

Featured Replies

Hi there I'm new to the forum and thought I'd post here to ask for advice.

I've just brought a 1994 M registered Skoda Favorit 1.3 SPi that recently had the clutch changed (about 2 weeks ago so I'm told) and since the clutch was changed the speedo and odometer have ceased to function. The rev counter works fine but trying to figure out what speed I'm doing is proving more difficult than I thought.

My question is whether it's likely to be the speedo cable that's at fault and if it is speedo cable then where the hell can I found one as I've been told by Skoda this morning that they've ceased manufacture of the cable, is there another car that shares the same cable as I'd desperately like to keep the car going as they are becoming quite scarce now!

Thanks in advance for any help!

Yes hello, the felicia has a compatible speedo cable. It might be worth checking that it is still attached to the speedo though before you go scrapyard surfing.

Yeah, given the clutch change my first thought was that the cable is fine, but not attached to the drive pinion in the gearbox.

How would I make sure that it is connected to the drive pinion?

Ken's suggestion was my first thought when reading your description. Within the engine bay you should be able to locate/track the cable back down to the top of the gearbox housing. Trying to recall on my old Fav but on the Felly it's a straightforward plate retained by a bolt securing the connection onto the drive in place. You'll need to make sure this has been relocated & secured correctly as failure to do so may give rise to your problem.  :)

Failing that, the other end of the cable may have been pulled out from the back of the speedo.

the worst case would be that if/when they refilled the gearbox oil the plastic drive pinion has fallen into the gearbox... it does happen

Went out to see what I could do earlier or if the above things helped, my cable is a straightforward screw on style thing however when I removed the cable the little square drive thing simply fell out in my hand so I'm assuming that will be the problem!

No mate fav one screws on both end so is different to the felly one that pushes on the speedo head.

I would think you can still get a replacement cable but if you struggle let me know and I may have one kicking around.

In that case I am struggling to get one as Skoda no longer manufacture the cable for the Favorit and they don't have any stockpiled anywhere as I contacted about 6 dealers none of them have one listed, I've spoken to a few Skoda breakers over the course of the day and not one of them have got a Favorit or a Favorit speedo cable in stock so I'm either going to have to get one made up somewhere or find a Fav...

Try your local motor factors, often they can get control cables from aftermarket manufacturers like quinten-hazel or firstline, if not jim is your man, he's got a massive stash of illicit spares up his sleeve.

I have tried my local motor factors as previously stated none of the ones I have tried have them listed at all.
