Columbus map update

Featured Replies

I have just updated my firmware to 4020 without any problems and am now trying to install my maps. I get the map/nav system load from the DVD (after a while loading) but I can't find the option to copy it all to HDD. I did this once before but can't find the instructions.

Any help will be good

As I recall it should ask if you want to work off the disk or copy to HDD after you insert the disk.  What version map is it?

Copying itself in the background....for me.

You don't need to do anything usually (it may ask before copying but may not).

Try ejecting the disk and it should warn you what's going on. Then ignore it and it'll carry on.

Takes about 50 minutes usually.

Yup. You are right - no prompt just a background copy (v9 maps). Last time I did this (v7 maps) I was asked if I wanted to copy to HD so expected it to do the same. All updated now to 4020 FW and v9 maps.

Interestingly when I updated the firmware from 2760 (2 partition) to 4020 (3 partition) I expected to lose all my map destinations and music (only 1 track as the rest was on SD) and sure enough the one track of music has gone but all my previous destinations are still there! I assume it must have saved the destinations to memory and replaced them on the new map partition. I even went in to the setup to check and the disk has definitely got 3 partitions now.

Clever stuff

Frankly, I am not sure why 5xxx firmwares are not at all popular with members of this forum. There should be some reasons why manufacturer released several updates after abovementioned 4020 (5218, 5238), bugs fixes is one.

I've just burnt 5269mtv (factory 5269 with VIM and extended menu) - could not say previous 5238 urged me to do so. Simply feeling better when your device is up-to-date. Though firmwares are usually not in public domain (one have to register with dedicated forums), I've recently found this link having 5269 available:

Possibly a mistaken belief that anything above 4xxx is too 'new' for their Columbus or that 5xxx is only for MkIII Columbus...

Or that there is no real benefit if the have already upgraded from 1xxx or 2xxx to 3xxx or 4xxx!

Perhaps its the lack of information available from reliable and trusted sources.

I don't know, but you are correct in that there seems to be little uptake.

Absolutely! Looks like old good Germans keep their secrets well, though the reason is unknown to others. Mysterious German logic (mostly it works though :))

I was more concerned about updating to an incompatible version and bricking my unit - it is after all 2008 hardware. There is little 'official' help for this, if VAG/Skoda had a site with downloads and guidance (albeit with a 'do at your own risk') then we would all be happier. At the moment it is a case of another member saying 'I have the same unit rev as you and was OK using 4020' that makes me feel better about the risk. I am not scared about the process as I have worked in IT for years it is just a lack of official information that makes me cautious.

Isn't that just the new Mk3 Octavia MIB Columbus?

Isn't that just the new Mk3 Octavia MIB Columbus?

Luckily no, the procedure described is for RNS-510 and clones. Newer device updates from SD in much more user-friendly manner.

A little bit dubious as it states the card should be formatted as FAT32. I am pretty sure that then restricts single files to 4GB, but the map disc is bigger than that.

There are no single files larger than 4GB on the DVD, so FAT32 is fine for copying the maps to. The instructions for SD will assume you have the latest firmware, since it certainly would not work on earlier versions.

What is defined as 'the latest firmware'?

41xx? 5xxx?
