Rough running/hesitation under load at low rpm

Featured Replies

Hi guys,I've just managed to nurse the car home tonight having suffered lumpy running under load at low rpm. The car drives fine at cruising/high speed but accelerating away from a roundabout at 1800rpm in 3rd gear the car just bogs down and runs like an old London bus!

A few weeks ago, while taking Lloyd for a spin, the boost pipe popped off the turbo outlet but I don't think this is the cause tbh!

I think castle combe has murdered a coil pack but I have no way of checking electronically!

Are there any mk1 owners with a code reader near Swindon that might be able to have a nosy?

Cheers,mark!!

Engine would be running rough at and rpm if it was a coil as ive had 2 go on me try unpluging your maf sensor and see if it any different

If the coils are on way out they show up more under load.

Youll find that it wont show on a scan either as only time they show is when they go totally.

If you have one spare change them one at a time and go for a drive.

Any eml?

Shame your the wrong side of bristol.

I found out this morning i have a neighbour with vag.com so were gonna scan the car and see what happens,my money is on a coil pach tbh I hope there are no codes as that would make me lean towards coilpack failure even more...

Juuuuuust when I don't neeeeeed it!

Cheers guys!

Mark ;-)

Right, had the car scanned on vag.com by my neighbour and its spat out the following codes!

17647 Injector cyl 3 (P1239)

17648 Injector cyl 4 (P1240)

16684 Random multiple cyl misfire (P0300)

16687 Intermitent misfire cyl 3 (P0303)

17608 boost control valve N249 mechanical malfunction (P1200)

Does anybody know where to start?

The injectors are 6-7k old so I know they're fine..

N249 I have no idea! Thought I deleted it,obviously not

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Well you need to drive it, to see if the codes come back.

Anyhow there is faults for injectors and misfire detected.

So.....

I'd start with replacing the spark plugs.

Plugs can't be fried already,surely?

They've only done 6-7k! :-(

I'll drive it tmrw after work and see if it comes back....this is starting to look like a pain in the arse waiting to happen!

Yes very easily.

What plugs are you using ?

NGK Iridium BKR8EIX is the part number....not cheap at £30 odd a set!

Cheaper than coilpacks though!

I used to use BR8EIX plugs on my evo.

It used to kill them off pretty quickly.

Swap to copper core plugs, they will be fine and are about a 3rd of the price.

no3 coil pack failing

mine no 4 went on way to wok tonight got to drive home on 3 in morn as spare at workshop lol

Really ??

It's ok under load, but not at idle / low rpm..

Niki recommended I get these for the heat rating. Lol!

Don't Spose you have a part number of the copper core plugs you run do you russ?

Pleeeeaaaasssse????

I agree you should be on a heat range 8.

I'm using BKR7E, but they don't do a BKR8E.

However....

They do a BKR8E-11 which will be fine as the -11 bit just means they are gapped to 1.1mm so you just need to close the gap a bit.

yeah have seen this before on my last one ended up being the coil pack ;-(

but could be a number of things really

Fair enough, you know these engines better than I do :)

I'd still swap the plugs anyway, I never used to run more than about 4k on a set of irdiums even with sensible power lol.

Cheers russ,I'll start looking for a set ;-)

agree also on plugs i had a new one fail in 100miles lol

Good to hear it's sorted, even if it wasn't the cheap(er) fix :)

Brilliant...

Having replaced all four coils with new ones the car is running rough low down again!

Didn't change the plugs last time but I'll get it scanned and see if the same codes come up! :-(

Plugs I have are a 9 (sent the wrong ones) heat rating,is this way off?

Got 8's in at the mo...

Focus RS coilpack mod might be in order! ;-)

9's are too cold, especially at this time of year, give it a month or 2, and you won't get the car to start, you will just flood it and foul the plugs.
